We plan to spend one night in Amsterdam before catching a flight home. We want this to be as easy as possible. Can we stay at the airport (so not have to schlep luggage a long way) and take public transportation into the city for the evening? Thanks for any advice on this!

The train service between Schipol & Amsterdam Centraal is direct, frequent, takes about 20 minutes, and costs about 15 euros return.

Whether to stay at an airport hotel or one in the city will depend to some extent on your check-in time for the flight out, but if you want to overnite in town you can use your cabin case for overnite & leave your checked bags in airport luggage lockers or left-luggage desk.
