Whoey Posted October 26, 2005 #27 Share Posted October 26, 2005 Dan, I'm not sure as CB radio's here in Australia dont need licences anymore - they did like AGES ago. I think marine radio's require licences but not UHF... I don't really know, maybe someone else out there knows more about this...???
Whoey Posted October 26, 2005 #28 Share Posted October 26, 2005 Kiwi Kruzer, 5 reasons is quite a lot :) We want them to keep in touch as we have quite a few family & friends going on our cruise and dont really want to waste time walking all over the place to find people if you feel like catching up. Also, we have kids and its an easy way to stay in touch. No one said YOU had to take them :D

Kiwi, I dont have 5 but.... My brother is taking his 10yo son. His son is very responsible and has asked to have his own key and be aloud to sign himself in and out of kids club. If he signs himself out and wants to catch up with his Dad or me he can give us a shout on the radio and find out where we are. If for example we are in the casino where he cant see us we can meet him. I think a 10 second chat on the radio and him knowing we are on lido deck by the pool is better then him spending 10 or 20 or 30 minutes running around the ship looking for us. Dan Dan Have you used these on a cruise before & if so would you really recommend them? The thing is, I have 3 children so I'd have to buy 4 of them, although I'm not so worried about my oldest who will be 15. My other 2 will be 11 & 10. I thought maybe the pager would be better but I'm not sure how they work either. I take it the kids just go up to one of the crew and ask them to page us. Is that correct? The last time I went on a cruise I was young & single and didn't have this worry. I'd like to be able to give my kids the freedom of leaving kids club when they feel like it. I don't really have a problem with my 11 y.o daughter as she is very mature but my 10 y.o. son is no where near as mature as her (probably my fault because he's "my baby"). Anyone's ideas on this would be greatly appreciated. Karen
kaseyoz Posted October 26, 2005 #31 Share Posted October 26, 2005 We just had a particular spot we always sat near if on deck so we can be found. We also said if anyone went anywhere they had to leave a note in the cabin. (postit are good) We saw quite a few younger kids running around alone but they tend to be a small group and never did i see anyone been trouble. Just play it by ear and see what happens. Take them a few times till they gt the lay of the land so to speak. They may get stressed if they feel they are lost. Plus there is a ton of people on board. I too would feel happier with my 10/11 year having a pager. It is for your peace of mind as well. \Nothing worse than trying to relax worried about what your kids are up to. karon
luvvin_u_2 Posted October 26, 2005 Author #32 Share Posted October 26, 2005 i think during the day all the kids are fine as long as they know not to go on the island by themselves if they are only young.. at night would be the best reason to have them just so kids feel safe if they are in the cabin alone

We just thought it seemed like a really good way of him being able to get hold of us and eliminate the need to run around trying to find us or leavig notes etc. Cheers, Dan
Family 5 Posted October 27, 2005 #34 Share Posted October 27, 2005 Hi, We have recently returned from a 7 night cruise on Pacific Sky. We have 3 children, 12,8,4. We hired both a pager and 2 walkie talkie handsets. The pager was mandatory from the Younger Childrens kids club and the walkie talkies for our 12 year old. It was great to have contact with him as he would head off by himself and it would have been impossible to find him without them. There is a lot of space to cover if you go searching on foot. On the first day, before we hired them, he lost us for a couple of hours, he was fine but ended up just sitting in cabin waiting for us to return rather than getting out and enjoying the boat. We found the 8 year old didn't need one as she wanted to be in the kids club every minute it was open and although she had signing in and out rights, never needed to find us outside of regular meet up times.
