Has anyone had the issue of being turned away at a Sandals if they are sold out of day passes? Is this common? They advise calling 2 days ahead, but we will be on the ship that week?

Yes, it happens. Definitely don't just "show up" especially during peak season, which is now through end of April. You can always call before you leave and make a reservation...
