unclerich Posted January 16, 2016 #1 Share Posted January 16, 2016 I've posted this on the Alaska boards, as well - but 'know' you folks better. We're looking into the upgraded tour from Anchorage to Seward on HAL. We'd opt out of the train and have a Kenai cruise included. This is the description: About the Excursion Upgrade your journey between Anchorage and Seward by adding on a visit to Kenai Fjords National Park—a majestic tidewater glacier on Alaska’s most popular wildlife and glacier cruise. Marvel as it calves. Feel its power and hear it roar! You’ll travel to the face of a tidewater glacier and witness one of the most active tidewater glaciers in the park as it thunders into the sea. Watch for humpback whales, orcas, seabirds, sea lions, otters and other wildlife. This trip is narrated by certified captains at the helm of the most modern fleet of vessels in the state. Enjoy lunch on board as you track your route on the flat-screen monitors displaying the map of this beautiful national park. Additional Info This tour is available to guests sailing Southbound Seward to Vancouver only. Guests that have an included cruisetrain will be opting out of this trip when purchasing this Kenai Fjords Cruise option. Dress in warm layers. Bring your camera and binoculars. This cruise will spend some time in open waters. If you think you may be susceptible to motion sickness, we recommend taking motion sickness medication the night prior to alleviate discomfort so that you can enjoy your sailing. Wildlife sightings are likely but not guaranteed. Tour operates Sundays only. Has anyone does this? Do you still take a train first and then the Kenai tour out of Seward? How much time would the Kenai cruise be? Thanks for any info. Richard
shrimpboat123 Posted January 16, 2016 #2 Share Posted January 16, 2016 I did this exact same excursion in Jul 2013. Although I didn't have the included train ride from Anchorage to Seward. You will take a bus from Anchorage to Seward. You leave around 8AM and arrive in Seward around 11AM. Your luggage will continue onto the ship and you will be dropped off at the Kenai Fjords tour location. The excursion itself is about 7 hours. We left shortly after 11AM and got back around 6PM and went to the ship to be checked in after the tour. We really enjoyed the trip and saw lots of wildlife. You can see some of the pictures I took in my trip report. The link is in my signature.

shrimpboat123 Posted January 16, 2016 #5 Share Posted January 16, 2016 Did you also have to send your carry-on luggage to the ship while you did the excursion? I had to think back on that one. I believe all the ship luggage went via a separate truck to the ship that morning. We took our carry-ons with us on the bus and left them on the bus while we were on the tour. After we got back, the bus took us to the terminal for check-in.

Krazy Kruizers Posted January 16, 2016 #7 Share Posted January 16, 2016 That is the way it was for us when we took the train from Anchorage to Seward. The suitcases went on a truck and we kept our carry-ons with us. Just wanted to see if HAL was changing anything.

Browser495 Posted January 16, 2016 #9 Share Posted January 16, 2016 This was a great excursion! We did this trip in July/15. We had a beautiful, sunny day and saw a lot of wildlife. We are glad we did it, it was a real highlight of our Alaska trip. It's a bus from Anchorage, you opt out of the train when you book this excursion. Enjoy.
