samisone Posted January 18, 2016 #1 Share Posted January 18, 2016 Hello, I am going on a land (Australia & New Zealand) and cruise (transpacific) vacation. For a global cell phone service, it looks like Mobal offers a good product at a good price. My home service is verizon. I contacted Verizon and asked if my phone would handle a GSM SIM (is it unlocked?) and their response was "I took a look through your account and to answer your initial question, your phone is not locked to our network so if you want to use another SIM card from another carrier while traveling abroad you definitely can. Since your phone is designed for our network we cannot guarantee you will get service with another provider but as long as they support your phone you are good to go." To me, this a tiny bit vague. Has anyone had experience using an unlocked Verizon phone with a Mobal SIM? Thank you in advance for any help/insights!
cherylandtk Posted January 18, 2016 #2 Share Posted January 18, 2016 To answer that question you would need to tell us which brand and model phone you are using on the Verison network.
navybankerteacher Posted January 18, 2016 #3 Share Posted January 18, 2016 After pursuing that question with Verizon (our regular provider) to the point of actually identifying hassle factor as well as probable cost for the amount we would actually use acell phone overseas, we found Mobal to be far and away the better choice. As a matter of full disclosure, we only make an average of one or two fairly brief calls per day while overseas (part of the purpose of vacation is to get a change of activity). - a low level of activity makes Mobal clearly superior.
