Is Montego Bay safe to do on own with 3yr old?

We are going to Montego Bay in just a few weeks on Carnival Triumph, I was wondering is it possible to do things like go to Rose Hall on our own or should we book through Carnival? I also want to go the beach at Doctor Cave's. We will have our 3 yr old DD with us. How much are taxis's there?

Having small kids that age (I have a 3 and 6 year old) and coming in on Carnival I would look at Carnivals excursion to SeaWind beach club. Stones throw from the MoBay cruise terminal but on a secured peninsula next to secrets resort. They have a nice pool, bar, food, watersports and you will not be bothered one time by anyone trying to sell you something. Going to Doctors Cave takes you right into the downtown area (not pretty IMHO).
