Made hotel reservation - decision OK?

Driving to Metairie hotel for night before our cruise (included in package). Was going to book another night before our cruise, but it seemed like too much of a hassle to take taxis back and forth to downtown area.

We decided to book a hotel in St. Charles area for night that cruise ship arrives back in port. I read we could take the streetcar to various attractions. Much cheaper than staying closer to Bourbon St., etc.

Good decision?

We would like to take in some of the major attractions the day ship docks and spend a bit of time in evening (not too late)

If you want to see sites near port, Metairie is not that convenient (nor are taxis inexpensive). Have you tried some of the hotels in the CBD (Central Business District) instead of actual "French Quarter"? They are literally across the street from the French Quarter and can typically be much less expensive (depending on what is going on the days you are here, i.e., conventions, etc.). Drury Inn on Poydras used to have a stay and park option. Where for one fee you could stay and leave your car while you cruised and they shuttle you to airport. If you want to see a lot of sites, you probably won't be saving money by staying in Metairie.

You can get on the streetcar and take it to a lot of the sites. You can get to French Quarter, Garden District and Uptown area. But you can't go to outer areas like City Park, Zoo, etc.

OP is not talking about coming into town from Metairie! They are talking about staying on St Charles after the cruise. So for the OP, yes, streetcars will work fine for getting around after your cruise and to get to different points for sightseeing.
