We already reserved a private fishing charter for Juneau... Trying to decide what to do for Skagway and Ketchikan...

It's my husband and myself and 2 teens (16&17)

Not wanting to spend a lot as fishing charter is already $$, but want to do something fun.. Don't think our family would enjoy the bridge walkway thing...

Any suggestions??

How hard is it to rent car and drive around and not get Lost?

I don't think there's more than 100 miles of road in all of Juneau so it would be hard to get lost! With a car you could drive to Mendenhall Glacier and hike for a bit, drive to the Coast to Eagle Beach, Shrine of St Therese, Douglass Island ....

Things to do on the town web site:

Even a basic map with distances:

This site for Ketchikan has numerous ideas:

Read past trip reports (in STICKYs above) to see what other travelers have done in the past. Their experiences might work for your family too!

Borrow FODOR's Alaska Ports of Call from your library for lots of ideas at every port.

You picked a good time to go up to Alaska to fish, the Kings should be running at their peak about the time you will be there. I would definitely rent a car in Skagway, we rent from Avis. Download a copy of “Murrays Guide” to help guide you along the South Yukon Highway up to Emerald Lake, stop in Carcross for lunch. I like renting a car in Skagway, gives you more freedom to do what you want. It would be almost impossible to get lost in Skagway, one road up and one road down. In Ketchikan it’s a pretty small place you can get around on the bus or do a walking tour. The ships dock in old town and everything is pretty much right there in that area.

Are the fishing poles to use? Or would my husband have to bring his on cruise?

The Tongass Trading Company is next to the pier. They seem to have a little of everything. Give them a call about rods to rent and fishing licenses. If they don't have them they can recommend someone.

Or call the Chamber of Commerce.
