Anthem Review- March 7-19, 2016

Recommended Posts

Just off the Anthem yesterday and here is my review.

Let me start by saying we had a great cruise. The weather was PERFECT! The seas were calm, the ship was beautiful and being on a cruise for almost two weeks was heavenly! I would not hesitate to sail on Anthem again.

We had a balcony stateroom on deck 11 aft. We loved our room and loved, loved, loved our stateroom attendant Selwin!! Plenty of storage in the room and 4 suitcases fit nicely under the bed. Loved the glass door on the shower. Temperature was easily controlled and our room was always comfortable. We made great use of the balcony and loved every minute.

The food was for lack of a better word "weird". We had dynamic dining and it was fine but next time I would do classic. We never saw an assistant waiter for the first four nights. We ordered drinks 3 times at each dinner and never saw the drinks. Not kidding here. It was awful. Our food in the 4 included dining rooms was never "hot". We learned to be happy with warm. We ate in Grand 4 times and the food was very good. We ate in Chic twice and it was really bad All four of us were served ice cold food. When we were finished with our appetizers we sat for 35 minutes with the empty plates in front of us. The second night at Chic we never ate dinner. We left and went to the Windjammer and had a great dinner. Later that night we went to guest services to let them know about our dinner experiences the past four nights and they had the person that runs Chic and the person that oversees all four dining rooms come and talk to us. We were told that the waiter was concentrating on his "classic dining tables" and we basically got lost in the shuffle. We were not happy about this but they said it would be rectified. All of our dinner service and meals were excellent after this, but still served warm, not hot. They also sent a bottle of champagne to our cabin.

We also ate at Jaimie's Italian twice and it we really good. They give you a 25% discount after the first visit. Highly recommend the plank, rice balls & lamb chops!

We ate at Chops and it wAs ok. I actually enjoyed my filet in the Grand better.

We loved the windjammer. We ate breakfast and lunch there most days and they had great offerings that were always good. I am hooked on the crepes that they make for you!

Loved the roast beef sandwiches in two70. Salads were good too. Did not enjoy breakfast there.

We had coffee and pastries delivered to our cabin each morning to enjoy on the balcony. Coffee was very good as were the pastries. They call us right before they deliver it.

We were not happy with the shows. We saw We WILL Rock You, Spectre Cabaret and the Gift. The music from WWRY was ok but the play itself is stupid. The other two were just plain horrible. Did not like the last show either... Dan Bennet, comedian/juggler. Did not find him entertaining at all. There was a comedian at the welcome aboard show and he was funny. I forget his name but we also went to his late night show and enjoyed him very much. We were disappointed that there were not more comedians on a 12 night cruise.

Our itinerary was western Caribbean. Labadee was a beautiful beach day. In Costa Maya we went to Maya Chan (booked on our own) and had a wonderful day on the beach! We loved the Mexican lunch and being served drinks in the ocean. I would return here anytime I find myself in Costa Maya. In Faulmouth we just shopped by the pier and had lunch at Mararitaville. We got off for about a half hour in Roatan by the shops near the ship. You are greeted with a big sign that tells you how dangerous it is there. Not for me. Back on the ship for a relaxing day by the pool we went. In Cozumel we went for an all inclusive beach day to occidental grand. I would not go back.

Went to the spa twice for massages and they were the best spa experiences I've ever had on a ship. The massages were wonderful and there was no sales pitch at all! I loved both of them. After I had the first one they sent a $50 gift card to my cabin which is why I booked the second one. Awesome!

We played in the casino and immediately became VIP on the second night. We had free drinks for the rest of the cruise! ... And they were great drinks!! This was a welcomed perk as the drinks were $12.48 each. Over the top expensive IMO! My husband was so happy he never purchased an alcohol package because it would have been a waste! We had a great time in the casino topped off by us getting a call in our room the last night from Shiley Wong, casino host saying "You Hoo! Get down to the casino and claim the free cruise that you just won"!!! What a surprise and what more perfect way to end our cruise!!!

While on board we went to the Next Cruise desk and booked a cruise for our family next March on the Allure! We are so excited. We only have 30 days to book the free cruise that we won and only have a few to choose from. We are pretty sure we are going to pick a 7 day eastern Caribbean sailing on the oasis on 4/30.

These boards have often debated about the sharing of the royal replenish package (or any drink package for that matter) and I just want to mention that I had the Royal replenish package and every time I ordered fresh squeezed oj whether in the dining room or windjammer they always brought one for my husband too. We never asked for it, each time we told them we only have one package and every time they said they know that and to just enjoy.

It's really crazy to blast someone that asks about sharing when I can tell you first hand it was encouraged onboard by the servers.

Tips: Another sore subject around here... On the 4th day we removed the auto tipping due to the poor and non existent service. We tipped everyone with cash and ended up spending much more than we would have had we left the auto tips in place. There was no way I was tipping an assistant waiter when we never even saw an assistant waiter. Nor were we tipping a waiter that never even brought our food at all. On that note the service in the windjammer was excellent and we tipped well every time we went there. Our cabin steward was also a very happy camper. He was so appreciative too.

Debarkation in Bayonne was by far the easiest we've ever experienced.

I'm sad that our vacation is over but have 2 more cruises to look forward to!!

Any questions feel free to ask! Thanks for reading my review!

Nice! Thanks for sharing your experience, and congratulations on the free cruise! We are looking forward to a 12-day on Anthem next year!

Thanks for your review. Trying to decide to book the Anthem for June but not sure if you had a good experience or bad. Confused.

We had a great cruise. Just some bad experience in the dining part. I can tell you that we were told by the staff that spoke to us that the current dining program is not working out as they had hoped and that within the next few cruises they will be turning the current 4 restaurants into "main dining rooms".

I read through your dining experiences, and sorry to hear about some of them. You mention that you removed the auto tipping on the 4th day, because you felt you had "poor to nonexistent service" and then you say it was rectified. You then go on to explain that the service you received in WJ was excellent. The same staff serves in both places. The staff actually has specific rotations in the WJ for lunch and dinner besides the staff that regularly works the WJ for dinner service.

You mention that you 'tipped very well every time we went there' -- did you leave cash on the table each time?

Since you did not utilize traditional dining, were the rest of your servers, who after day 4 did provide improved service -- not tipped.

I am just trying to understand how you personally handled this.

Thank you for the explanation. We really want to book this cruise but we keep getting conflicting reviews for the Anthem.

What did you do to become VIP in the casino? Did you have to play for a certain amount of time or bet at a particular level?

In writing it's 300 points per day on your card. She did us right away. She didn't make us wait until the next cruise. I'm not sure why. We didn't ask questions as we were extremely happy about the free drinks that came along as a perk. She put a vip sticker on our card and she gave my husband a nice rci casino royale green polo shirt and I got a rci casino tee shirt. Winning the free cruise on the last night was icing on the cake!!

We tipped each night in the dining room at least $10.00 cash. We even went back to the grande and tipped the server from the very 1st night in cash so he wasn't jipped by taking the auto tips off.

We handed the cash to the servers in the windjammer and also in the dining rooms. I can tell you that they were very hAppy with the cash gratuities.

BTW, not all severs in windjammer rotate from the dining rooms. In getting to know one in particular she told us that she works exclusively in windjammer.

A couple of people on my roll call have mentioned that they heard that removing dynamic dining from Anthem may happen in the next couple of months. It will be interesting to see how this will be done since my understanding that there isn't enough capacity in the 4 restaurants for everyone on board to be able to do dining like on the other classes of ships. Since I haven't been on the Anthem yet, from your experience on board can they do the switch or will there be unhappy cruisers being told to eat in the buffet because there's no room?

This is unique only to Quantum class. On other ships the Assistant Waiters do a rotation in the WJ every so many weeks.

So what you are saying is that there will be a early seating and a late seating, no MTD, and the time you eat will be determined by your cabin??!!:eek::(:mad: OMG, what a nightmare that is going to be!!!

It sounds like they are just adjusting how it's presented. Like on my 3 day Anthem all four restaurants served the same menu each night. You will just stay at the same table every night I'm guessing. And just like now they will limit the number of classic seatings, still offer MTD, and tons of people will still opt for the specialty dining rooms since that is one of things that ship is known for.

Actually sort of interesting the uproar here when they said these ships would have dynamic dining and no MDR and now they are switching to a more traditional concept again and there will be another uproar. :)

They told us that all four restaurants will become main dining rooms with 2 seating so. Each cabin will be assigned to one of the dining rooms either early or late seating.

I'm not sure how they can do that without adding many more tables. The capacity that I've seen posted here for each of the restaurants:

American Icon = 430

Chic = 434

Silk = 434

Grande = 432

Coastal Kitchen (Suites) = 125

Total: 1855 x 2 seatings = 3710 (this assumes suite guests are assigned to eat in Coastal Kitchen and cannot go to the other 4 dining rooms).

Maximum Ship capacity = 4905

So that would mean 1195 guest would have to eat in the specialty restaurants or buffet or other dining options, such as Johnny Rockets, Sorrento's or Room Service.

How would they assign dining for the 1195 guests that cannot fit in any of the included dining rooms?

Even if they have MTD as an option there would still be difficulty fitting everyone in without expanding capacity.

Any thoughts from others who have been on the Anthem, is this do-able?

Yes, some servers do work exclusively in the WJ. But the MDR wait staff so rotations between WJ and MDR for breakfast and lunch, since there is limited service in the MDR for those meals and WJ is extremely heavy at times.

We just booked 4 cabins on the Anthem for the July 9, sailing a week ago. At that time our travel agent told is something is really strange with the dining. She said Classic Dynamic dining is CLOSED. No wait list or anything, just closed. All we could do is Dynamic Dining. When I went to the cruise planner, we got premium times with no trouble at all 4 dining rooms. I was shocked since we booked so late. SOMETHING IS UP!! :confused::confused:
