Taxis in Le havre

My husband and I are in Le Havre on Ovation OTS in a couple of weeks and would like to take a taxi to Honfleur, spend a few hours there and then head back to the ship. I have a couple of questions though that hopefully someone can answer for me.

1. Do the taxis come to the cruise terminal or will we have to walk to the edge of the port or go into Le Havre? (we are there on a Tuesday I think)

2. How many people can fit in a taxi? We have a couple of people interested in joining us from our roll call, 5 including us. Are they standard 4 passenger cars or maybe something a little bigger?

3. Any idea of cost per person?

Any details would be most welcome , Thanks :)

We just returned from a Viking Star cruise that stopped in Le Havre.

- taxis come into the port, and await customers at the cruise terminal. But the supply may not meet the demand. Depends on day, time, weather, etc. If there are a couple of monster ships like the Ovation in port that day, there might not be enough taxis.

- the port is huge. It's not practical (nor terribly safe) to walk into Le Havre

- most taxis that I saw were European sedans that could hold 3 pax, perhaps 4 if one sat in the front. Some are minivans that can hold 6 or 8.

- we decided to pre-arrange a taxi (split between two couples) and spend a day visiting a number of towns/villages in the area: Honfleur, Deauville, Beaumont-en-Ange, Beuvron-en-Ange. See map here.

- thanks to recommendations posted on CC, we booked with Patrick Spiess. <spiess.patrick@orange.fr> He has his own minivan that can sit 7 comfortably, 8 if two people sit in the front with him. He speaks english very well and is an excellent driver.

- another option is Taxi Le Havre, found here.

We will be there in August. How many hours did it take to visit all of those towns/villages? What was the cost ? Was it a total for the day or individually priced? Thank you for your response. Please send to my email: seitchik@juno.com

We would just add a note about one of the posts. We have often walked out of the Port of Le Havre and it is not a problem for those that like very long walks (it is about 1 mile to get out of the port area. And the reason we walk is because we often rent a car from Europcar...whose office is located outside the Port.

As to the taxi situation, it does seem that French taxi drivers march to their own drum...and that changes with the tides :). Even if there are taxis waiting in the queue at the port, there never is a guarantee they will take you where you want to go :(. For example, you might ask a taxi to take 4 to Honfleur...and they might say "Oui" and quote you a fair price (they usually want 20-25€ per person which is somewhat excessive) or they may say that they will only take you if you hire them for a few hours (for several hundred Euros). Everything is negotiable. Of course if all the taxi drivers decide they want to have their morning coffee you might not see many taxis at the port :).

Patrick picked us up at the port at 9am and had us back to the Viking Star at 6pm (well before sail-away at 7:30pm). The day was quite self-directed - basically the schedule was up to us. We wandered around the smaller villages with him for 30-45 min each, shopping, looking in shops, tasting Calvados:-)

In Deauville, he dropped us off near the casino and we had a hour and a half to wander the downtown, shop in the market, etc. Ditto at Honfleur: he dropped us off for 3 hours. We had lunch in a small café overlooking the harbor, then walked around, shopped, took photos, wandered into art galleries (there are lots), the old church...

The price for the day was €350. We split it between us and another couple. There's room in his van for six (comfortably), so you could split it three ways if you found some compatible travel companions on board (assuming you're on a cruise).
