Some places are easy to DIY

Cohb- there are trains all day to Cork, but Cohb is a cute little town with the Titanic museum.

Dublin- there is a shuttle into town and you can do the hop-on-hop-off bus and stop wherever you want Trinity College and Guiness factory.

Invergordon- take the train ride to Inverness- beautiful town

Guernsey- there is a fort within walking distance of the port and the public bus takes you around the island for little money. You can circumnavigate by bus in under 2 hours.

Belfast- I did do the ship excursion to the Giant's Causeway and highly recommend it.

Greenock- we stayed in town that day, but it wasn't very interesting. I'd recommend an excursion of some sort.

Edinburgh- you can take a shuttle for 10 pounds per person (roundtrip) and then walk the city. It's about 2/3 of a mile uphill to Edinburgh Castle

Hello!

This review, from DeloreanGirl , is a must read for this cruise. It is from a while ago but contains lots of useful information.

This message board is for the British Isles and the people on it give very good advice. Don't be afraid to ask questions.

You are doing the same itinerary we did!

I agree with the others....join your roll call. There are lots of people looking to do independent tours and are will do to lots of research before booking.

This is a website our roll call put together for our sailing. Check out the independent tours for each port under the tabs at the top. All were excellent and I would highly recommend. They were in small groups of no more than 16.

Hope this helps!

I sailed on the Ruby Princess in August of 2014. I joined the roll call and was able to book an all day private tour with cc members to Normandy that was fabulous. I booked the rest of my tours through Princess. My thoughts:

The Giants Causeway tour in Belfast was awesome!

We did our own thing in Dublin because I've been there many times. Book of Kells, Trinity College, Temple Bar etc.

We just walked around Guernsey and went to the Fort without a tour.

I booked a tour to Culloden in Scotland and it was incredible. Others in my group went to St. Andrews that day instead. The town of Sterling, Loch Ness were wonderful.

I did Edinburgh on my own, amazing beautiful town. The Royal Mile walk was charming and I tried Haggis in a pub. Delicious!

I've been to Cobh many times, so our group had a private tour with a friend. If you really want to kiss the Blarney Stone & see the Blarney Woolen Mills, go to Cork.

Have fun!

Anyone been on British isles cruise that can give me some tips on booking the excursions, other than going through the cruise line?

We did it on the Royal in August/September and did all independent tours. If you care to contact me at the address below I would be happy to share our itinerary spread sheet with you.

We did the 12-day British Isles cruise last year on the Royal. We found that there was much more we would like to see than there was time to do. We decided that we should have booked a back-to-back cruise so we could have done two excursions in each port while still having to pay for just one round trip air fare.
