Norwegian Getaway...Nothing Special

Fortunately we have been able to cruise a lot (over 60 cruises) and we have done the Getaway twice and have two more booked on it for later this year and have enjoyed it. But doing the Caribbean on many of our past cruises has taken any kind of a wow factor out of it for us. Still great fun and the ship is great and we get treated very well but I don't expect to get wowed anymore in the Caribbean. That being said we have never done an Alaskan cruise but we now have one booked for this and one for next year and for those I do expect to be wowed. Just my thoughts.

Do you think that your perception of lack of a more personal customer service could have been impacted by the size of your group? 25 is a big number. Maybe a couple or smaller group would have a different perception?

I'm devouring every Getaway review to prepare for my transatlantic next year, thank you for sharing your experience, it helps :-)

I don't think it was the group size that impacted my view on customer service, as most times, it was just my husband and I, and sometimes our kids tagged along with us, and a couple of his sisters went with us to dinner one night, as we knew it would be difficult to get 25 people into a Restaraunt at the same time.

Again, the cruise was fine. Just not overly special. And we are NOT high maintenance. I also am the first to state, that people complain about the stupidest things. I'm not complaining, by all means. Just felt there was little effort made, to make you feel welcomed or special.

Here I will give you an example. On our previous cruise, our waiter found out that my husband liked Indian food. So guess what??? EVERY Night after that, he had the chef, who was Indian, make a special Indian Dish (Curry) on top of our other Entree's for the evening. We were traveling with 2 other couples. And each night, the waiter from would have a special drink ready for us at our table. Our waiter would also inquire how our day was, and treated us like his guest. I agree he went FAR beyond his call of duty. On other cruises, the workers would know my kids by name. It's just the simple things.

Did it keep us from having fun...absolutely not.

For my bride and me, the boat is way to move us from one port to another. It was a cruise that introduced us to the Virgin Islands (where we have spent a few non-cruise vacations since then). This time (the May 29 sailing) we are looking forward to being introduced to other parts of the Caribbean.

We're not looking for top of the line service and amenities - just a clean, safe, comfortable way to see other parts of the world.

Definitely not a fan of Getaway and will not cruise on a ship that large again. Even with our Haven suite we just felt the ship was too crowded resulting (IOP) in subpar service in the specialities. Casino crowded and smoky. Overall, we felt it was "meh"...

I am not nervous at all about sailing on the Getaway! We are sailing May 29th. Overall the reviews have been overwhelmingly positive. We will have fun! The ports will change too. I would get bored going to the same ports. Plus the Million Dollar Quartet will be on the ship beginning in May! The ship will be rocking literally and figuratively!! And when it goes to Europe next year, we plan on being on it again!

This ship gets such mixed reviews. We are sailing on it in July. It will be our first NCL cruise and reviews like this make me nervous.
Honestly, I always take the attitude that a cruise is always what you make of it. If you go in with a nervous or negative attitude, you will likely be looking for things to tick off in the "Getaway Sucks" column. If you go in with high expectations, you will almost certainly be disappointed because nothing will be able to meet the perfection you had in your mind.

This is Norwegian. It's a great cruise line, but it's certainly not Cunard or a private yacht. I have enjoyed both of my NCL cruises. Sure there were some things that could be done better, but all in all, a week on a cruise is better than a week in the office. I have greatly enjoyed all of my cruises, even Carnival Fantasy, which was an extremely out-of-date smaller ship when we sailed. Like I said, a cruise is what you make of it. Resolve to have a great time and enjoy!

I know this is called "cruise critic" but I totally agree with you blackwing! I have been on the Windstar to Turkey and Greece (which is the epitome of luxury cruises in my opinion with only 190 passengers), Holland America to Alaska and Carnival to the Caribbean and found them all to be wonderful in their own way! Attitude is everything! I also agree to not expect everything to be perfect either. This is my first time finding and participating on Cruise critic too. I am truly enjoying and appreciating the reviews. I have been learning a lot. Thanks everyone!
