Liberty: missing port at Cozumel, Progresso

Hi all,

I contacted Carnival's PR folks about this on Monday to ask for a recap, and here's what they had to say:

Hi Ashley –

Carnival Liberty experienced an issue with the ship’s bow thrusters during the previous voyage (May 2-7). Bow thrusters are required during docking maneuvers. They are not required for the normal operation of the vessel except when coming in and out of port. In the absence of full bow thruster capability, the ship can arrive and depart a port with the assistance of tug boats and maintain its normal itinerary. Based on when the issue occurred during the last voyage, we were not able to secure tugboat assistance in Cozumel in time to call at that port. Future voyages are expected to operate as scheduled and the ship is presently on a new voyage. Technicians are working to resolve the issue and tugboat assistance for docking maneuvers will be arranged as needed in the interim until the repairs are completed.

Hope this helps to clarify.

I am sure y'all have heard or read that a passenger is missing and believed to be overboard on the Liberty.

All guest were sent to their cabins for a head count and so the crew could search the ship.

my husband and boys decided to go and chill in the cabin and order room service tonight.

I hate it for anyone to miss a port they've counted on going to even though I realize that Mother Nature can render it necessary. We base our cruise choices more on itineraries rather than ship.

For those that say "good we missed a port - more sea days" ... anytime the ship is in port it can still function as a "sea day" for those that choose to stay aboard.... and much less crowded than a real sea day. The pools/hot tubs are open as are all of the lunch food options and many bars. From my previous Fun Times I see there are ship activities scheduled.:)

If the casino being closed for a few hours causes real anxiety in the overall scheme of a multi day cruise then that individual may just come to realize they might have a gambling problem ... just sayin'

Good points made by summersigh. And on a this 5-day cruise, there are only 2 port stops--so we have plenty of true sea days to begin with!

This will be our first experience on a 5-day cruise. We've done lots of 7-day cruises, with several different lines. Cruising out of Galveston is convenient for us and we thought we'd give one a try--but if the ship doesn't make the favored (to me) port, then it is not really the trip/vacation that I had planned and expected. Mother Nature aside--or tragedy, I don't want to make light of the sadness that accompanies the recent incident--I expect a ship to be maintained and operate in such a way that mechanical issues do not interfere with my cruise experience.

And a little communication goes a long way. Just saying!
