eyeu Posted July 25, 2016 #26 Share Posted July 25, 2016 Bordeaux is going to be a very special place..if it is not already. The mayor has really infused the future with all the upgrading he has done to the city. In addition there is a new high speed train that will go from Paris to Bordeaux in 2 hours...from there catch another train to Archachon and you will be there in another hour!!! We traveled there by van..traffic was heavy but luckily we made it in about an hour. A must see!! Also near the new wine museum the remnants of the big German submarine base is around the corner. rick
westerngardener Posted August 6, 2016 #27 Share Posted August 6, 2016 We also enjoyed Arcachon and next time will make a day trip by train rather than take the ship tour as the traffic was awful and it took almost 2 hours to get back when we visited in April. We spent 4 days in Bordeaux very recently and loved the city! We did not do any of the museums but the new wine museum is open now and looked very interesting, as well as unique to the area. There were open air markets everywhere in Bordeaux, different each day. Visiting public markets, farmers markets, etc., is very high on our list of things to do and there was a lot going on outdoors in Bordeaux. Whiling away an afternoon sitting at a cafe overlooking the main promenade was a favorite way for us to soak up the ambiance of this lovely city, which is bustling with energy and people. We loved it! Can you recommend any hotels in Bordeaux? :)
caviargal Posted August 6, 2016 #28 Share Posted August 6, 2016 Can you recommend any hotels in Bordeaux? :) If you want elegant, Intercontinental is a grand old hotel in a great location (formerly was The Grande). We also stopped in and checked out BEST WESTERN Grand Hotel Francais and very much liked the location, friendly staff and modern rooms. It is a nice 4 star on a quiet street in a great location. Intercontinental has always been a favourite of ours, especially the one in Sydney, AU, and Miami. Have stayed at both before cruises and they certainly add to the experience. Will check out the Best Western for a comparison. Thanks.
