Another guarantee question.

Has anyone had a personal experience with this?

What do they do if you have a balcony guarantee and all the balcony staterooms are booked? Do they hold enough out from sales to cover the guarantees?

Guess this all comes down to should a ship "over book" are the guarantees, without cabin assignments, guaranteed a room?

It doesn't happen very often. I only remember reading about one instance where someone booked a guarantee and did not get at least that category of cabin.

I have read about people who booked guarantees and ended up with a cabin in a higher category that wasn't what they wanted. In one case, it was a balcony guarantee that got upgraded to a family suite that did not have a balcony. In another, they ended up in a cabin where the beds could not be made into one bed.

If the ship is overbooked, Princess may offer some good incentives to passengers to reschedule their cruises. But the cruise lines have been in business long enough to know how to balance supply and demand to maximize their profits. Having to give incentives to booked passengers hurts their profits.

If you are the type of personality that stresses about "not knowing" I really believe you should book a specific cabin number. As pointed out by geoherb, what the cruiseline considers an upgrade might not be considered an upgrade by you. Examples might be beds that do not convert, a noisy location, an inconvenient location etc. If the only thing that really matters is being on the ship, go for the guarantee!

Thank you for responding but that was NOT my qustion. It was "should a ship "over book" are the guarantees, without cabin assignments, guaranteed a room?"

We have booked guarantees before and are well aware of "what the cruiseline considers an upgrade might not be considered an upgrade by you". We also ALWAYS book the category we'd be very happy assigned to. icon_smile.gif

Oooops, BJS! You're right! I did get on my "guarantee soapbox" and neglect to answer the question icon_eek.gif

Though it hasn't happened to me I know of people who were asked to take a different cruise and offered upgrades and amenities to make the change more palatable. I would hope the cruiseline would do all in their power to keep the customer happy!

BJS,

Yes I do know, they do count your guarentee as one of the ones sold, thereby making the availability go to zero.

It would be a very rare event when they actually "overbooked" to the point where they have to forcibly move someone down. They make it worth someone's while to move and if you don't want to.. you don't.

Life is at it's best when your address floats
