JamsN4 Posted August 26, 2016 #1 Share Posted August 26, 2016 Sailing on Jewel to AK in 22 days for our honeymoon :) My 1st time on NCL, DFs 1st time ever cruising. Due to financial constraints (wedding) I booked interior. We are currently on Deck 9 in a decent location I feel with nothing major above or below us. Contemplating using CC points to reduce the cost to upgrade to an OV. In addition to the 2nd perk (likely the pre-paid option) we'd be only be out of pocket appr $200. My only concern is the OV is on Deck 5. Any experiences with deck 5? Seems that the casinos and some dining is on Deck 6 so wondering if loud noises can be heard while in the cabin. Worth the change in your opinion? TIA

Or you could always take your chances and try to upsell to an OV or Balcony a week or so prior to sailing.

As I was speaking to the rep it was stated it would be mid ship picture window however it is considered a Guarantee OV. That was what confused me a bit since the guarantees do not have the perks. He confirmed I would have the perks (probably since we'd be paying the mid ship picture window rate- not sure). I had considered waiting a week or so before but there are not many OV cabins left however there seem to be quite a few balcony cabins
hawkeyetlse Posted August 26, 2016 #4 Share Posted August 26, 2016 Sounds like you're being offered an OB GTY. It's not OX, so you get perks; doesn't matter if it's a guarantee booking. I'd rather be on a higher deck. Alaska is all about the views, but the views are best from a public deck (or at least from a balcony). If you're sitting in your OV cabin looking out the picture window, you're not really doing justice to the scenery IMO.

Unfortunately unless prices drop significantly (or by some other miracle) we will not be able to do a balcony. You think just stick with the interior on 9 vs OV on deck 5? With this type of guarantee booking is there a chance I can end up on something other than 5?

With this type of guarantee booking is there a chance I can end up on something other than 5?Personally I would stick with the inside on Deck 9 (and plan to spend as much time as possible outside during daylight hours). The nice thing about viewing the scenery on a public deck in Alaska is that you'll hear people go "ooh!" and you run over there and you'll see the whales or the otters or whatever they spotted. You see a lot much more with so many people on the lookout in all directions. With an OB GTY, yes, there is a slim chance that you could be upgraded to a higher meta (balcony or mini-suite). But it's rare. I think the previous message was trying to say that low deck midship is a good location if you have issues with seasickness. Até Posted August 26, 2016 #8 Share Posted August 26, 2016 Being able to sleep without the noise from a slot machine all night or the kitchen crew at 5am is better than the view from a OB picture window. I would never do a GTY in any ocean view category. Deck 5 forward under the meeting rooms is the only area I find okay. Otherwise deck 8 aft works well. eatdrinkfly Posted August 26, 2016 #9 Share Posted August 26, 2016 personally i'd do the upgrade... $200 works out to like $28 a day. and to me, being able to tell it's light or dark outside is worth it. and you get the extra perk and the gamble of an upgrade.
