What do you recommend for us to do in Antigua?

Again I type " go to your nearest bookstore and pick up a copy of Frommers Caribbean Ports of Call" 5th edition (latest printing) for $16.99..... best investment you will make towards planning your cruise !!!! It is full of info...such as getting around, shopping, restaurants, beaches, tours both w/ship or own your own... and much much more. Better yet, just go look at it and decide for yourself.... I wish I had bought it before my first cruise.

We will be on Antigua Nov. 29th and decided to "do our own thing" - have rented a suzuki grand vitara hard top 4 wheel drive auto/air with unltd mileage from Hertz for $ 51.00 total . Must show your us drivers license and buy an antiguan one for $20.00 (will make nice souvenier) but works out much much cheaper than taxis and we have control over when, where how long etc.... they also deliver it to us at the ship if you book through the main office thru the international 800 number for hertz. will spend the day checking out beaches, Nelsons dockyard etc. etc. TIP: always head to the furthest point from the ship and work your way back as they day progresses. that way if there is a problem you will be closer as it is time to be back on the ship ....:)

We'll be visiting Antigua for the first time next February, and we've booked Lawrence of Antigua's 3-hour tour for the 8 people in our party. Everything I've read on these boards indicates that Lawrence does a great job, and the cost is a mere $30 per person. His website is http://www.lawrenceofantigua.com.

In addition to Frommer's, I'd recommend Fodor's, as well. We have well-read copies of several port and island guides, including those two.

Our favorite excursion of all time is Eli's Eco-tour, http://www.adventureantigua.com. We've done it three times, and are scheduled to do his new Xtreme Circumnav tour this January. There's tons of stuff on this board about Eli's tour.

  • 2 weeks later...

I just got back from the Serenade and booked the kayaking/snorkling excursion from Paddles of Antigua. It was an amazing day...lasts about 5 hours. You are escorted right from the boat (with those folks who paid much more money through the cruiseline for the same thing), taken on a short bus tour to the other side of the island. You then meet Jennie and her parrot Sweet Pea, and board some fast power boats to where your kayak awaits. After some fun kayaking (with instruction!) and a 'race' back to the boats, you are taken to Bird Island for a short hike up to some amazing views of Antigua. This is followed by some snorkling over reefs, and the boat ride back, where you are met with punch, banana cake, and a refreshing towels for your face and scented water to rinse your feet. I can't imagine a more perfect excursion and extremely reasonable! Check out http://www.antiguapaddles.com. I'm going to post this as a separate note as well. Highly recommended! And it's not all day, so you have time to shop and do something else if you wish.
