IndyCapt Posted October 24, 2016 #1 Share Posted October 24, 2016 We're boarding Independence this weekend for the TA. We usually like to carry aboard a case of water and our favorite soda that isn't available on the ship. (Diet Mountain Dew)...is there anywhere within walking distance for such a purchase the night before our cruise? We're staying at the Novotel-Southampton on West Quay Rd. Thanks for any advice... Twickenham Posted October 24, 2016 #2 Share Posted October 24, 2016 According to Google maps: https://www.google.ca/maps/dir/Novotel+Southampton+Hotel/ASDA,+Marlands+Shopping+Centre,+the+marlands-western+esplanade,+Southampton+SO14+7EG,+UK/@50.9055823,-1.4136784,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m14!4m13!1m5!1m1!1s0x0:0x83cdca5717d3667e!2m2!1d-1.415272!2d50.905611!1m5!1m1!1s0x487476b0d434b395:0xd7af68e1c749a46a!2m2!1d-1.4069477!2d50.9059578!3e2, you're about a half-mile walk to an Asda. Rare John Bull Posted October 24, 2016 #3 Share Posted October 24, 2016 (edited) Easiest from Novotel is probably ASDA, a five minute walk. The front entrance, on Portland Terrace, is at the top of a hill but to avoid the hill walk past parking lots to the National Express coach depot, go into the white pedestrian portico entrance of the multi-storey parking lot opposite the Nat Express depot, hit the ASDA button on the elevator, and a skywalk takes you across the road into ASDA. https://www.google.co.uk/maps/dir/50.9056733,-1.4148711/50.9057953,-1.4090786/@50.9051824,-1.4121495,18z/data=!4m2!4m1!3e2 Click on "earth" for a good birds eye view, but on damned-silly new googlemaps  the route disappears in that format. https://www.google.co.uk/maps/dir/50.9056733,-1.4148711/50.9057953,-1.4090786/@50.9056891,-1.4094489,3a,75y,71.72h,89.44t/data=!3m10!1e1!3m8!1s8qaf4usP7EmxXevqaA8Bdw!2e0!6s%2F%2Fgeo3.ggpht.com%2Fcbk%3Fpanoid%3D8qaf4usP7EmxXevqaA8Bdw%26output%3Dthumbnail%26cb_client%3Dmaps_sv.tactile.gps%26thumb%3D2%26w%3D203%26h%3D100%26yaw%3D265.58484%26pitch%3D0%26thumbfov%3D100!7i13312!8i6656!9m2!1b1!2i40!4m2!4m1!3e2 In this streetview the Nat Express depot is centre-left, the white pedestrian entrance to the multi-storey carpark is centre-right with the blue-grey skywalk. Novotel is hidden by the traffic circle behind the camera. bazzyb Posted October 24, 2016 #4 Share Posted October 24, 2016 Diet Mountain Dew is not the easiest thing to get hold of over here. Asda don't sell it, you should be able to find it at Tesco though. Sent from my iPhone using Forums
GrJ Berkshire Posted October 24, 2016 #5 Share Posted October 24, 2016 Diet mountain dew is not found in the UK, except in specialist shops, not stocked by Tesco.
IndyCapt Posted October 25, 2016 Author #6 Share Posted October 25, 2016 Yes, I was wondering if it was even sold in the UK...thanks for the directions and all the replies!

south coast girl Posted October 25, 2016 #8 Share Posted October 25, 2016 (edited) Worth knowing if you're looking to purchase heavy groceries, most U.K. Supermarkets (Asda, Tesco, sainsbury) offer a delivery service if you order online. I once had a water plus bits delivery made to a London hotel, so I'm sure Southampton won't be a problem! The supermarkets give you a 2 hr delivery window, so just book it to arrive whilst you're having breakfast! Quite handy. Go onto their websites, register etc. http://Www.mysupermarket.co.uk is handy for comparing prices. Bob++ Posted October 25, 2016 #9 Share Posted October 25, 2016 They do sell Mountain Dew, but with a caveat: "Please Note:This is an EU product based on the American recipe." So don't expect it to be the same as you buy back home. I suggest you buy some and try it first.
IndyCapt Posted October 25, 2016 Author #10 Share Posted October 25, 2016 All good ideas and suggestions! Thanks for the help! We'll be checking it out Saturday when we get into Southampton. If we decide to just go pick up the items ourselves instead of using delivery to our hotel, is Tesco within walking distance of the Novotel? I know ASDA is close by....thanks! The main shopping street is called Above Bar Street, at the bottom of the street is the historic Bargate & beyond it that same street is called High Street. Tesco Express is just a few yards below the Bargate. https://www.google.co.uk/maps/place/176+High+St,+Southampton+SO14+2BY/@50.9017592,-1.4039141,3a,15y,341.98h,91.87t/data=!3m9!1e1!3m7!1sadwMPWaRrXORk5bsobAnug!2e0!7i13312!8i6656!9m2!1b1!2i40!4m5!3m4!1s0x487476b6608e6de1:0xf07b321f4a0b7f30!8m2!3d50.902144!4d-1.4044623 There are several other Tesco Express stores, the one in London Road is about the same distance but there's not a lot else of interest that way. One in the Ocean Village complex is convenient for those sailing from Ocean cruise terminal (not Indy, which sails from City cruise terminal). I drink gallons of Mt Dew in the States, but rarely see it in the UK. I think the diet is called sugar-free. JB :)

Hatters cruiser Posted October 25, 2016 #13 Share Posted October 25, 2016 It might be worth noting that the Tesco Express brand is the companies smaller convience store brand, and they tend to stock only the most popular things in the Tesco range that the British public buy. Mountain Dew Sugar Free might not be an item that the Tesco Expree JB has mentioned carries, in which case you may have to try the larger Tesco Extra store that Southhampton has. http://www.tesco.com/store-locator/uk/?bID=2156
