Harwich (Jewel) to London by train/taxi?

For three of us it will cost about $500 to get to airport from Ship by RCCL. Trying to find an alternative cheaper way and take a later flight.

Does anyone know how to get from Jewel of the seas to London by train/taxi or public transport? Is there a shuttle bus that goes from ship to train station, or to port gate? Were there taxis in front ship? if yes, can they go to train station, or do they only go for longer trips like London or airport? How much? Any info will be highly appreciated.

There is a train right by the port, less than 50 yards. We took it from Liverpool Street Station to Harwich two years ago- cost was about $50 a person. It is a "cruise ship" train. Dont know the scedule coming the other way. A helpful site is http://www.londontown.com- they have info on trains and other transportation.

We were having a lot of trouble finding trans to Stansted from Harwich (everywhere closed on Sunday in Harwich!!!!!), didn't fancy the idea of hauling our luggage on/off the train..................anyway, found a great site, silver-fleet.com, price is per car NOT per passenger. If you are interested, and you e-mail Tony Hayter, quote ASN, and he'll know your from the Jewel . BTW............we have booked with silver fleet, the owner, T. Hayter has been very helpful. No deposit req, pay at the end of your trip!....................:)

We took the cruise train from Liverpool St Station in London to Harwich this May, It's only GBP 17 or 18 per person. The cruise train ( coach ) stops right in front of the pier and your luggage will be taken to the cabin from the coach. Really convenient. It leaves at noon and the ship leves at 5 pm so we have lots of time to get there and also missed the earlier check-in rush.

On the way back from Harwich to Heathrow we prearranged a private cab long before we leave the country. It's 120 GBP for the 4 of us. Pick-up from the pier and direct to Heathrow. They had told us they'd send a Mercedes Benz. But we had lots of luggage and they sent a 7 seater air conditioned minivan instead. Excellent service at very reasonable price. Altho they say tipping not required or expected but with this kind of service we did leave a good tip to the chauffeur. The name of the cab company is VEV. I found it on the internet and then booked by email. No deposit required. I also had quotes from other cab companies but this 1 impressed us most with its replies and it's actually cheaper than the rest.

BTW, the poor driver waited for almost an hour before we showed up at curbside of the pier cos of the luggage wait. Still extremely polite and gracious about the wait. I highly recommend them.

The Jewel of the Seas is a beautiful ship. You'll love it.

If you are heading straight for the airport and want to do it entirely by public transport, you need to be aware of what exactly you're going to do after you've done the train to London.

The train goes to Liverpool Street Station.

From Liverpool Street to Heathrow involves either taking the Tube (with one change between two deep lines, or two cross-platform changes between surface lines), or the Tube (a surface line) or a bus to Paddington plus the Heathrow Express train.

From Liverpool Street to Gatwick involves the Tube (a surface line) or a bus to Victoria then the Gatwick Express train.

Taking the Tube with baggage requires a certain amount of fitness - I've described the limitations in many previous posts. It's generally a little easier if you stick to surface lines and cross-platform changes. But public transport will almost certainly be much cheaper than a road transfer via the cruise line or privately arranged. Of course, you can also replace the Tube/bus sections with a taxi, but a taxi directly from Liverpool Street to either Heathrow or Gatwick will be very expensive.

Depending on where you're flying to, you may want to have a look at Stansted, which has just acquired two new airlines flying to New York. Both claim to operate in all-business class configurations, although the two are as different from each other as chalk and cheese. You can reach Stansted from Harwich by train, by going to Liverpool Street and then taking the Stansted Express from Liverpool Street to Stansted Airport (where the train station is part of the terminal).
