S & S Cards no longer given at check in.

Check out the "sticky" posted by Laura at the top of the forum. I was really hoping that we would get a micro chip inserted just under the skin. :eek: That would eliminate the possibility of losing your card. :D

 

But seriously, it's really no different than the "chip" on your new credit cards.

Still does not replace the fact that common sense needs to be used.

Maybe I am missing something but what is the benefit to getting the card in your room vs at check in? And as far as using your passport pic on the sign and sale card people can change a lot in between the years you need to renew your passport.

I don't personally care either way, just feel like I am missing some benefit or something with this new system.

I have lost 150lbs since my passport pic was taken. I look nothing like that person. Also, one in our group has no passport and is using the birth cert.

 

Oh well, cruise is in two days. I won't worry about this too much.

I probably sound quiet dumb but what kind of equipment do they have that they can just pull up pics from government ID's?

 

Personally I cannot wait till they go to the RFID medallions like WDW. So much more convenient when its on your wrist than keeping a card.

 

Anyways our cruise is on the Fascination so I cannot imagine they will be one of the first to roll out anything new.

They place the Passport on a scanner and it takes the picture from there. Don't know if they scan DL or not as I have been traveling with a Passport exclusively the past 9 years.

If you don't look like your passport photo, or you don't have a passport, they take your picture with an iPad, or some similar tablet.....

They scanned our passports, and since I look nothing like mine anymore, my picture was retaken when we boarded the ship. They did not retake my husbands. I think if they had mailboxes on the Fascination the cards could have easily been in the mailbox!

There are people posting in other threads that they hate the idea (without even trying it) because what if someone steals your card and tries to charge all over the ship. First of all, you are on a ship and it is not like you can make a fast getaway. Second, they will catch you, there are cameras everywhere.

Then obviously, the card will be missing and you should report it to GS. Room numbers still aren't on the cards. Also, I'm not sure, but are the self serve machines on while in a US port? Because while you are docked in the US, sales tax has to be added to drink purchases and I'm not sure if they are set up for that. Never used one so that's why I ask.

 

While the cabin number is not on the card, the cards are sitting in the mailbox of cabin XYZ so it is safe to assume they are meant for that cabin. So yes, using self serve, someone could steal someone else's keys and grab a beer.

And put it back in the envelope before the cabin occupants arrive? Highly unlikely. But if so then it will be obvious that the cards have been tampered with and then they can go to the D/P/FTTF line, have the charges removed, and new cards issued. I haven't had any experience with the Self Service beer stations, and don't even know if they are on in Miami due to the sales tax as I have mentioned before.

Obviously if you're keys are missing and you're paranoid about going into your cabin because the boogie man will get you, then get a room steward to escort you in.

They may only get it to work for an hour but they could pour beer for half the ship in that time. :eek: And the possibility that they go to a busy bar where the swamped bartender doesn't even bother looking at the pic on the card.

To add, it's not that they would have a chance to steal anything from you but you know you've seen #()@^%#* kids who just want to cause trouble. They are on cruise ships as well and could do stupid things in your cabin before you get there. Think of something gross and a kid has probably tried it.

Well I can tell you they won't get far on my tab as I set up a cash account [emoji4]. But it doesn't stress me out because in that case I would simply go to the Priority line at GS and have the charges reversed and get issued a new card.

I've never seen them do anything to the cabins that are propped open while they are finished being cleaned with no cabin stewards in sight, so I don't see this as a highly likely scenario.
