Theater and Concerts

Does anyone else like to mix things up and not just do the typical "port tour" thing? We enjoy the arts in various ports and love to see historic venues. For example, we took in a symphony jazz concert at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam after our Baltic cruise last year and are planning to see Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf this year at King's Theatre in Edinburgh during an evening in port.

Which venues and shows have you found especially memorable?

Read reviews of what you're getting tickets for. DD decided to see the Nutcracker in Rome on its second day. These are the texts she sent me after the performance....

"There were dancing women in burkas" (the burkas were see thru, bikinis were worn underneath)

"The dance of the sugarplum fairies was a drunken French girl who was being seduced by 4 guys."

"Gender bent flamenco dancers and Matadors.....the flamenco dancers tops were bondage harnesses...." (meaning the flamenco dancers were men)

No where did it say she was going to see an interpretative version of The Nutcracker. Some things shouldn't be toyed with.

We enjoy the west coast repositioning cruises that include an overnight in San Francisco (our 3rd one will be in May). Because we lived in the Bay Area for many years, we've seen all the tourist attractions, so we generally check to see what's happening at the Palace of Fine Arts or other similar venues. Or... check out Beach Blanket Babylon - an outrageous show that's been running since 1974!

Similar experiences can be researched in almost any city - just Google something like "Art & Entertainment Calendar" with the city name and you'll get some ideas for what's available during your visit. And as noted in the previous post, it's a good idea to check reviews for whatever looks interesting.
