Can anyone tell me how easy it is to get from Messina Port where Silver Wind will be berthing to the interesting part of the town? I need to know this in case we decide to do our own thing and just explore the town. Thanks.

We did our own walking tour in Messina and it was very easy to do from our ship. We walked over to the main square and surrounding streets, visited the cathedral, stopped at a trattoria for drinks and bruschetta, then waited for the noontime chiming of the cathedral's astronomical clock. Since we had a port-intensive cruise with long, busy days, this was a nice way to take it easy for one port.

We have never found what we consider an interesting part of Messina. The Bell Tower/Clock at the Cathedral is within easy walking distance of the port....and might be most folks highlight of Messina. From this port we recommend going to Taormina...which is a cute hilltop town. If you do stay in Messina, just walk over to the Cathedral, perhaps take the trek into the center...find yourself a nice place for lunch, and then head back to the ship.
