Hotel for the day

We have ~14 hours before our flight home out of LAX. Has anyone ever used a hotel for the day. Not looking forward to taking the red eye home!

Tough question. I know of a couple of hotels near LAX that offer day use rates...

Of course, they are not cheap...and all you will really get for your money is a hotel room and use of an ordinary hotel pool...

A place to hang out, watch TV, sit by the pool on a lounge under the flight path of the continual overhead jets and a place to keep your luggage, followed by a short shuttle over to the airport. And some of them may have a check out time that still leaves you about four hours of your flight time...

You could probably try calling other hotels in the area and ask them directly what they may have to offer for your situation.

The question is whether you really want to do this?

Another option might be to rent a car, one-way from San Pedro (or Long Beach, depending on which cruise line you're with, though I'm assuming San Pedro as I think you are on NCL). You could store your luggage in the trunk while you visit a few places during the day. (Provided you can find parking in those places...sorry, this is LA). But you could stroll around Santa Monica--the Third Street Promenade, Santa Monica Pier and Palisades Park, do a little shopping--or window shopping, have a nice lunch and/or dinner in local restaurants...or visit the Venice Boardwalk. You could take the opportunity to go visit the Getty Center Museum or the Getty Villa. Or more... The day could be as active or as relaxing as you want. When you get to around two hours before your flight, you just drive over to LAX, turn in your car and have them shuttle you and your luggage over to the terminal...

Or, are you staying locally the night before the cruise at, perhaps, the Crowne Plaza or Doubletree? You might call the hotel and tell them that you have this issue...and ask them, either, if they might hold your luggage for you that day or even let you hang out in their lobby and pool...or just drop the luggage and hang out in the harbor area...maybe Uber over to the Aquarium and Queen Mary in Long Beach...then arrange for a shuttle or car service or take an Uber that evening in time to get to LAX for your flight...
