bandmp Posted February 16, 2017 #1 Share Posted February 16, 2017 Looking for an easy way to get to Dublin from Southampton and reverse with luggage. Is there a ferry, and what would it be like? The airlines charge a ransom for luggage. Any help will be appreciated! Thanks - Mary :):) :) :)
Rare John Bull Posted February 16, 2017 #2 Share Posted February 16, 2017 Hi Mary, Check a map, there's no ferry between Southampton and Ireland. Easiest by ferry would be to travel overland from the south coast of England to Holyhead on the north-west corner of Wales (by trains or buses) for a ferry to Dublin. There are other ferry routes but more complicated. Train schedules and prices http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/ Bus schedules and prices http://www.nationalexpress.com/home.aspx Ferry schedules and prices http://www.irishferries.com/uk-en/routes/dublin-holyhead/ As a rough guide, by train & ferry £170 pp return, 10 hrs plus connection times Or by bus & ferry £90pp return, 13 hrs plus connection times. By direct flight Southampton to Dublin http://www.flybe.com/cheap-flights/dublin/ It's difficult to quote fares without dates since fares are dynamic, but can be as low as £70 return (hand luggage only) or as high as over £200 for a late, late booking (hand luggage only). A 20kg case adds just £25 each way, extra cases per passnger cost a great deal more. Add £15 to £20 e/w for a taxi to the airport from a ship or central Southampton hotel Flight time about 1hr 20 mins. If you have a great deal of luggage, since this is a return trip to Dublin it might make a great deal of sense to store excess luggage at Southampton airport (£6 per bag per day) or elsewhere. That way, you can travel with hand luggage only or add a single shared case depending on how long you'll be in Ireland. JB :)
