Half Moon Cay Snorkeling

I have a question about Half Moon Cay...It has been a long time since we have been there. Our new "thing" is snorkeling, we have our own equipment. It looks like from the pictures you have to go way out to snorkel on your own. Should we plan on going to a different part of the island where it gets a little deeper, quicker or does anyone have any suggestions? We thought about a excursion but we really like our own time etc.

The snorkeling is pretty poor. I found an area on the extreme left facing away from the beach where some stone fish hideouts were placed and saw some fish there. But this is not a snorkel beach. Also, there are barrier ropes which you aren't allowed to swim past so you can't go far out.
