Wisconsin Travelers Posted March 1, 2017 #1 Share Posted March 1, 2017 I've read many threads about what to see in Gibraltar but never a mention about Alameda Gardens, which sounds like a wonderful stop for anyone interested in gardening. Has anyone been there? Is it walking distance from the ship? Is it worth seeing? Thanks!
Rare John Bull Posted March 2, 2017 #2 Share Posted March 2, 2017 It's about 100 yards beyond the bottom cablecar station. From the ship, more than 30 minutes on foot. You could take a taxi - perhaps share with others heading for the cablecar. Only a vague recollection, and I'm no gardening buff. But as best I can recall, although not large (15 acres according to the 'web) it's quite intricate with lots of little hidden-away sections, interesting little paths & steps & water features. No admission charge. Very pleasant, but probably not worth much more than an hour. It's well worth walking back to the ship. Heading back to town past the cablecar station, just by the Referendum Gate into town is the little Trafalgar cemetery where some of the sailors from the Battle of Trafalgar are buried (IIRC these sailors died from their wounds, those who died at sea were buried at sea). Then it's a pleasant walk past the Governor's residence etc and the shops, cafes & pubs of pedestrianised Main Street to Casemates Square. From Casemates Square to the ship is an easy if boring 20 minute walk. There are more exciting things to see & do in Gib,, but it's fine for a lazy laid-back day. marylizcat Posted March 11, 2017 #3 Share Posted March 11, 2017 The gardens also have a nice little 'zoo' where they have rescued creatures of many kinds. We enjoyed visiting it and also walking through the gardens. They are not particularly large or spectacular, but very pleasant.
