hobbess Posted May 12, 2017 #1 Share Posted May 12, 2017 Other than WIndsor Castle, what else can you do in Windsor? There's a Great Windsor Park that seems interesting, but they should call it the Very, Very Long Walk to get to Windsor Park from Windsor Castle. The name Long Walk implies its walkable, but is it really walkable? Or, do you have to take a taxi? How much would it cost to take a taxi from Windsor Castle to Windsor Great Park to see The Valley Gardens and Virigina Water Lake? Are the taxis in Windsor as expensive as the London cabs? FritzG Posted May 12, 2017 #2 Share Posted May 12, 2017 The last time we were there we took a hoho bus that took us all over Windsor and to Eton. You could do a Google search to find it.
Rare debsjc Posted May 12, 2017 #3 Share Posted May 12, 2017 (edited) If you are there on a day when there is an event on your could go to Windsor Races (horse racing). There is a boat that runs from central Windsor to get there, it takes 10 minutes http://www.windsor-racecourse.co.uk/whats-on/ The same people that run the boat to the race course, also do river sightseeing trips https://www.frenchbrothers.co.uk/public-trips/windsor-2-hour-round-trip Or you could just wander across the bridge to Eton, which is quite pretty. It is walkable from the castle http://www.windsor.gov.uk/discover-the-area/eton-p281731 Edited May 12, 2017 by debsjc
Bob++ Posted May 12, 2017 #4 Share Posted May 12, 2017 I would suggest a boat trip. https://www.frenchbrothers.co.uk/public-trips/windsor-40-minute-round-trip. The walk is three miles. http://www.windsorgreatpark.co.uk/en/experiences/the-long-walk-and-deer-park
Hatters cruiser Posted May 12, 2017 #5 Share Posted May 12, 2017 If you did decided to take the walk then it is only a little further to walk to Runnymede meadow where King John signed Magna Carta. It does require a walk down a hill, It's not too bad I used to do it regularly when I lived in Englefield Green whilst studying at Royal Holloway. Although I was a little younger and fitter back then.

dana r. Posted May 12, 2017 #7 Share Posted May 12, 2017 Google Maps shows that it is 5 miles from windsor castle to get to windsor great park: https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Windsor+Castle,+Windsor+SL4+1NJ,+UK/Windsor+Great+Park,+Windsor,+UK/@51.4520964,-0.6578866,12.36z/data=!4m14!4m13!1m5!1m1!1s0x4876113b36b5e89b:0xce2f4846c5f7e1e5!2m2!1d-0.6044027!2d51.483894!1m5!1m1!1s0x48767bc46977eb5d:0xd6d5a678618f0659!2m2!1d-0.617771!2d51.424085!3e0 But, Rome2rio shows that it is only a 33 minute walk, about 1.5 miles: https://www.rome2rio.com/s/Windsor-Castle/Windsor-Great-Park I don' know which one is correct. Rometorio are more than likely measuring to King George III statue, whereas google is measuring to the far side of the park. We walked up to the statue and then returned back To Windsor. If you do go, be careful of the wild deer roaming along the long walk. Sent from my VFD 900 using Tapatalk
celle Posted May 12, 2017 #9 Share Posted May 12, 2017 Last time I was in Windsor, after we'd been to the Castle, we just walked down to the river and sat there, watching the children feeding the swans and ducks. It was very relaxing.

Bob++ Posted May 14, 2017 #11 Share Posted May 14, 2017 The Windsor Great Park website I linked to says "This impressive three mile long tree-lined avenue begins at the George IV Gateway at Windsor Castle and ends at the magnificent Copper Horse statue."
