Alaskan Hair consults? Tooth whitening? Art auctions? What the heck?

Alaska is all about the scenery and wildlife. Princess has good outside forward-viewing unobstructed places to be viewing the scenery and looking for wildlife. Exactly where that is depends on each ship's layout. I spend hours outside on deck while cruising Alaska and usually get rewarded for it. As with the OP, I am not interested in art auctions, spa treatments, shopping, etc. You will find me outside forward admiring the scenery and looking for wildlife.

We were on the May 20 southbound Voyage of the Glaciers and found the naturalist's presentations in the Princess Theater to be very entertaining and informative. It was disappointing not to see more people attend them. She also broadcast over the speaker system at various times to point out things of interest. We spent a lot of time outside with our binoculars. The scenery is absolutely mesmerizing. Add to that some workouts at the fitness center; a couple of good books and an occasional "Alaska Mudslide" drink ( Kahlua, Bailey's, vodka, chocolate) and we were happy campers. We felt we were living a universe away from those who spent their time in the casino, art auctions and shopping.

So I'm taking my first cruise ever this summer... I've been poking around and found some old Patters... what the heck? I was hoping for naturalist presentations and other activities drawing on topics relevant to the history and culture and nature of Alaska. Instead I'm seeing a lot of really odd stuff. Also I'm not much into gambling and have hear that the odds are especially tipped to the boat... even more than they usually are to the house!

Am I going to find some things to do at sea? I am planning on packing some reading.

Thoughts?

Are there crafts? Are they related to the area we are cruising? (Alaska)

Just got off an Alaska 7 day. We do not gamble or go to those spa events. They had an Alaska based event or even multiple every day. They had a preview of then Lumberjack show where passengers competed in axe throwing, learning to can-can dance, gold nugget bracelet making, a naturalist who gave many talks, puppies, park ranger talks and kazoo playing in glacier bay... and much more.

The spa events are silly and not well attended. I recommend going to at least one art auction. You do not need a placard and it's fun to get a free glass of champagne and watch people. There are also great art lectures by the staff.

Even the silly things like the bean bag toss become fun to watch.

Most days we couldn't find time to do everything we wanted.
