Shopping in Freeport

I don't remember seeing half of those stores listed in that link... But oh well! Just avoid the Dunkin' Donuts at all costs-I have never had worse coffee in my life, lol. There's also a Versace at Port Lucaya, but I never go in-it's just a tease when you can't afford it!

The cab cost is $5/pp each way, and I don't recall seeing any wheelchair accessible vans. I was in Freeport in May, 2004-and you can see the change from the hurricanes. There were still houses with the roofs off and hollowed out apartment buildings. It was amazing to see the damage still.

Im sorry I neglected you poor folks here.

We were in Freeport last Monday. LEft a snowstorm home to go to the Bahamas where it was cold...brr. I think it was 48 and VERY windy.

We did take a taxi to Layca MArketplace. 5.00pp one way. Something I never read was that it IS a long ride. Maybe half hour stuffed in a van taxi with 8 people. Guy made us pay for round trip and said he will be back for us at 1:30. Had me worry the whole entire time for no reason. (he did come back on time)

Shopping here?? Its cheaper at home. We really thought we would find bargains with alcohol, cigerettes and cigars. Save it for grand Cayman. We found the prices to be very high considering its a duty free shopping area.. the prices on some cigars were the same as home without the tax added.

Hair braiding here was 120.per head. COuld do tons better in Costa Maya or Jamaica for sure.

We did go to the Casino and dropped a few bucks. SO walked away with 100 pocket money on top of the 20 he put in the nickle slot.

The beach is right down the road from the Casino-which is where the taxi will drop you off. I am sure if it was a nice day the beach time would have been great. I have pics that I am waiting to upload- never have I seen a beach so desserted. You will notice lots of people with hooded sweatshirts-with the hoods drawn up over their heads.

There is a place in this marketplace that sells drinks in pineapples or coconuts for 6 bucks.. if you buy a 16 oz you get a 10 oz for free. (now that was a bargain)

Our friend needed deodorant so we stopped in the pharmacy and they wants 5 bucks for the same exact thing you get in the dollar store at home.

I think the Hotel was the Sheraton-- they have a nice pool located at the beach. WHo is to know you are not a hotel guest?

Becareful and do not take a private cab. they cost 25.00 one way. You want a shared taxi.

When you get off the ship and into the pier there are gazeboos directing people to the place they want to go. Get in the right line or you will wind up somewhere else. (I think I recall three gazeboos-- one to Lacaya, the other to international Bazarr- and then the 3rd went some where else. There are a few booths here for sovernier shopping also.

I hope ya'll have better weather then what we did. ALl in all it was a fun day.

Thanks for the info. on Freeport. I did not realize that the Marketplace and beach were 1/2 hr. drive from the pier. I assumed it was close by. I'd like to do some shopping with my daughter and then hit the beach. How much time does it take to do the marketplace?

it depends on what you are looking for shopping wise-- we window shopped in less then an hour. the beach is right down the street.

We didnt check out the international Bazarre- so dont even know if there is a beach there.

Just make sure you know which place you are going so you can get into the right taxi zone.
