Churches of Rome-St. Peter's

We are looking for a tour of churches of Rome, stressing some of the more famous art/sculpture and artists.

We also would like to do a tour of St. Peter's alone, not in combination with the Vatican Museum.

Does anyone have suggestions/experience?

Thanks

Maybe check out the American Catholic Church in Rome, St Patrick, to see if their Tours meet your goals.

https://stpatricksamericanrome.org/

When Santa Susanna was the American church, they offered priest guided tours of different churches each week. Did not find the tour link on mobile, so not sure if they are still offering them at the new church. But Father Greg is still with the church and they still offer a guide book for a donation. So an inquiry would verify if the new website doesn’t have a tour link.

While I don’t know how much their church tours emphasize art, vs history and architecture, I would imagine art is covered since art was integral to the message of most Gothic and Baroque Catholic Churches in any place of those periods.

Enjoy your trip to Rome!

We spent 3 days in Rome and we only got to scratch the surface of Rome's churches and art. Here is a list of churches that impressed us the most.

Santa Maria Maggiore. Near train station. Built in 440 and updated in the 1500's. Beautiful but no great art other than 5th century mosaics. Tomb of Bernini is there. Nearby is Santa Prassede basilica which has stunning mosaics.

St Peters in Chains by the colosseum/forum. Home of Michaekangelo's Moses. Epic statue.

Santa Maria Della Vittoria home of Bernini's Ecsatsy of St Teresa

You cannot miss the Vatican Museum. But that is a large museum. You can choose your tour but art lovers love the Raphael Rooms (School of Athens) and ending with the Sistine Chapel. If that isn't enough, you then enter St Peter's. Rick Steve's has a nice audio tour on St Peter's that you can download plus use his Rome guide book. As you walk into St Peter's you will see Michaelanelo's Pieta on your right. Amazing that you just have seen some of the world's top art treasures in one tour.

St John in Lateran is another old and over the top decorated church. No great art but seeing it and the nearby Holy Stairs is impressive.

Then there is the Pantheon. Been a church since 609 but the building itself is breathtaking. We are well travelled and seeing the Pantheon is my #1 wow moment on any man made object. No great art but Raphael is buried there. But seeing the building is an art treasure in itself.

Many other things to see too. Good luck.
