Deadline to Cancel Ship's Excursions

We are docking in Civitavecchia for a day next October and we have been to Rome several times. We simply want to transfer to Rome, spend a few hours in the area of the Pantheon, Trevi, Piazza Navona, Spanish Steps......have lunch.......return to the ship.

We prefer not to take the train and unless we can share, private transfer are too expensive. The cruise line offers a transfer to Rome which then allows you 5 hours on your own. This would work well for us.

What is the usual cancellation policy on ship excursions? Could we cancel the day before if we change our plans?

Thanks
