Kilmainham Gaol

Has anyone toured the Kilmainham Gaol in Dublin? What were your thoughts and who did you buy tickets through?

My Wife and I just returned from England, Ireland and Scotland a few months ago. Yes, we toured the old prison and it was nice. We took a 2 day tour and if I recall, the total was something like $55 for the bus. We weren't there on a cruise, We flew into Heathrow, rented a car and toured by ourselves for two weeks.

We stayed in Dublin and did the tour of the prison it was very interesting and historic and if you also go to the cemetery you follow thru on the historic names and see what happened to them

We did it last summer as part of an independent land tour of Ireland -- my two sisters and me. There are a few different HOHO bus operators in Dublin, and Kilmainham Gaol is on their route. Easy to do on your own. It was a very interesting tour -- I'm glad we did it.

I've been to Kilmainham two, maybe three?, times. Never done it from a cruise ship. I've family outside Dublin, so I go and stay for a week or two every few years.

 

The gaol is...disturbing, not necessarily in a bad way, but there is so much history that has occurred there, and it can be felt. They've changed the tour recently, so it was a different experience the most recent time I went, but still, chilling.

 

Unless you're with a specific tour, you'll likely want to look for tickets online (just search for Kilmainham Gaol tickets) as they tend to sell out early each day. HOHO buses are often simply waved off by the Gaol staff once the tour tickets for the day have been sold.
