Tour Guide or DIY?

We don't want to spend a lot of money but also don't want to waste time getting lost and figuring out what to do the day of. Are tours worth the money or is it just as easy to explore on our own? We're looking into some sightseeing, some beach time and some shopping. Thanks!

Any of the licensed taxi drivers will do a good job as a tourist guide. If you head to the cruise port taxi stand you will see a sign that outlines various tour options. If you want something different just talk it over with the dispatcher.

You could also easily do all of those things on your own. The shopping is in Philipsburg, which is a short walk from the pier. Catch a bus to Mullet Bay for some sightseeing - although it will not be a narrated tour, but any locals on the bus will be more than happy to answer questions. Once you get to Mullet Bay, you are at one of the best beaches on the island. Enjoy the water there and then walk over to Maho to see the world-famous airport where the runway is right next to the beach and the planes fly incredibly low in order to land. Then take the bus back. Very easy to do a DIY tour in St Maarten.

Any idea of price. We have 4 people and would like a 2-3hr circle tour going from the cruise port to Orient, Grand Case, Marigot, and ending in Phillipsburg. Not interested in long stops, just want to see the progress of recovery. Thanks

I don't know how current the information at http://www.saintmartintaxis.com/ is, but it should give you some idea. See tour rates near the bottom of the page. Tour descriptions and maps can be found at http://taxistmaarten.com/.
