princesspat1 Posted June 11, 2018 #1 Share Posted June 11, 2018 I'm looking at the last two weeks of August for a Rhine cruise. I see that the prices drop slightly in August and wonder why. Are there pros/cons to sailing then? Heat? Closures?
Rare notamermaid Posted June 11, 2018 #2 Share Posted June 11, 2018 Heat? A heatwave is possible but not certain. 30 degrees Celsius in the afternoon but it can be less, if you are unlucky you can have rainy days of 20 degrees or less. France is on holiday, for the Rhine cruise Strasbourg and the area will be affected. Closures? I cannot imagine so but would not swear by it. Perhaps a past August cruiser can help with that. Possibly more crowds than in September as school holidays mean more families can be on holiday in Germany. Low water can happen but is more likely in September and October. Con: less daylight than in July. Pro: more daylight than in September and October. notamermaid
mimmy52 Posted June 11, 2018 #3 Share Posted June 11, 2018 It was 2014 when I took a Rhine river cruise. We had high water so the cruise had to start in Breisach rather than Basel. We had a lot of sunshine, yet when I was on the top deck and the ship was moving, it was cool enough for a jacket. Just goes to show that you never can tell what the temperatures will be on your trip. I wouldn't even have brought a jacket had it not been that I spent a pre-cruise visit in Lucerne and knew at some point I'd be on a mountain.
