Shopping and things to do outside the port

we will cruise for the first time to Costa Maya in May. Is there shopping outside the port? Can u just hang around the town?

 

I ask because when we went to porgresso there was a bus that took u into town that we could go and explore outside the port.

While being built up, there is very little shopping and few places to "hang" in the immediate town outside the port, called Nuevo Mahahual. If you take the tram from the port or a taxi from just outside the port you can go to the village of Mahahual itself and walk along the malecon. Lots of beach clubs along the way to grab a drink or a lounger, but little shopping other than trinkets. So most shopping is at the port which is your typical port shopping vendors.
