mysusie45 Posted July 30, 2018 #1 Share Posted July 30, 2018 Friend messaged me this morning that their Avalon Amsterdam to Budapest cruise leaving on 7/31 will begin as a bus trip. 2 days in Amsterdam then bus to Cologne. Looking at water levels throughout Europe I have a feeling that more of the trip will also be on a bus.
Rare notamermaid Posted July 31, 2018 #2 Share Posted July 31, 2018 This could well be the case. The lower Rhine is deep enough for sailing so I am a bit surprised that they start in Cologne. Perhaps catching up with the ship as it had lost time in the shallower stretches on the previous voyage? Whatever the reason may be the passengers will not miss out on much doing this. Hopefully they can appreciate the countryside from the coach windows, it is not spectacular but nice. The shallow stretch is South of Cologne. That being the most scenic stretch river cruise lines will do their utmost to ensure that passengers can see it from the ship. Fingers crossed that it will work. The Danube is still more affected than the Rhine. There a stretch currently needs to be "circumnavigated" on coaches. notamermaid

Missing that first day of cruising isn't so bad as that part of the Rhine is quite industrial. I hope the rest of the trip works out better.
