Indiana Jones Posted January 9, 2007 #584 Share Posted January 9, 2007 We arrive 3/11/07 around Noon and will have until Noon the next day until cruise ship departs. Have a resv w/Hampton Inn-they do shuttle, etc. but was wondering about stores/restaurants within walking distance at this place (which is not cheap by Indiana standards)?? Saw the Holiday Inn Express on 17th St. mentioned here...is this a better choice (same $$ as Hampton Inn) for our short one day stayover if we'll need some eating options and grocery/drug store, etc. stops ? I think they do an airport shuttle, but no port shuttle. Thanks for your advise and/or ideas.
signman Posted January 9, 2007 #585 Share Posted January 9, 2007 Go for the 17th Street location. You are totally surrounded by all sorts of stores and restaurants. Plus you could walk to water taxi, or catch the Sun Trolley to the beach. Hampton Inns are very reliable, but this one is not really near to anything. Bequia Posted January 9, 2007 #587 Share Posted January 9, 2007 Does the Sun Trolley stop by The Bahia Mar Resort? Absolutely. Whats nice about the Sun Trolley is that you can flag them down from anywhere along the route to get on the trolley and get off anywhere you want as well. Is it in a good area and how close to restaurants is it I can pick this up using my Marriott points It's a very safe area, many corporate offices and affluent residential neighborhoods. Shopping and a fine selection of restaurants nearby. If you have a car it's a great location, without one, cab fares will be costly.

signman Posted January 9, 2007 #596 Share Posted January 9, 2007 It's certainly satisfactory for a night. Convenient to airport and PE. Hampton Inns means no surprises. Not too much in the area, take a cab when you go out. Better to be safe than sorry. Do a search, much has been written about this property. We stayed there in Oct 2005 (Sunday night, before Wilma came through on Monday morning!). We walked over to the Winn-Dixie grocery store in the strip mall (there was a Big Lots store and other misc strip mall-type stores) and bought a case of water and some snacks. It wasn't the greatest of neighborhoods, but definitely wasn't the worst either. I felt VERY safe in the hotel. There was a McDonalds next door, but not too much else, food-wise. Maybe a chinese takeout restaurant in the strip mall. There were a number of "locals" there that came to the hotel to "weather the storm" and it held up very well (built after Andrew) considering the damage to the greater Ft. Lauderdale/Miami areas The hot breakfast is a plus. At that time, they had shuttle to/from the airport and the seaport, too. GP
