Miami airport hotels question

We are booked into the Marriott "campus" of hotels in the southeast quadrant of the airport area. Looking at google there seems to be some shopping and a casino within walking distance. Just wondering about the safety of the area, especially after dark as this will be mid-January.

It is not an easy walk from the Marriott to the strip mall and the Casino is even further. The campus is flanked on two sides by residential houses and a high wall (with graffiti) separating it.

I do not live there and cannot comment on the experience of walking through the neighborhood at night but it is striking how every house is heavily secured with burglar bars on each window and even on some doors.

You could walk south along 42nd and then east to the strip mall but that is a very busy area with high-speed traffic and not much to see EXCEPT for the Latin Café 2000 which I am very fond of (at least at this location). You should try and go there IMO instead of walking to the strip mall!

Also some road construction at this time near the campus.

I would not call that area dangerous at all. It is a working class neighborhood. You will see no one walking around though, especially at night. I guess the "safest" way to walk there would be to stay along 42nd ave and NW 7th street as those are busy streets all night.

If you want places nearby to walk to, stay in the Brickell or Downtown Miami area.

Magic City Casino is not the best place in town, from my knowledge it is pretty run down.
