richbum Posted January 14, 2006 #1 Share Posted January 14, 2006 This is another one of my stops and was wondering what kinds of things to buy for people @ home, and where to get the best bargains.:D
bruce-r Posted January 14, 2006 #2 Share Posted January 14, 2006 Cayman Island and Bargains are mutually exclusive terms. $1 US = only $.80 CI, so you start off in the hole. This means that if something is priced in CI $, then it will cost you $1.25 US. Everything is pretty expensive there.
sbbquilter Posted January 15, 2006 #3 Share Posted January 15, 2006 Hubby broke his leather sandals as we were going into GC in December. Asked around and were given the name of an upscale shoe store (we were embarassed to go in as we were just off a stingray trip) and the shoes were very expensive. The clerk kindly directed us down the street to a store the local use and he found a lovely pair for $25 US - a real bargain for leather.
Katie333 Posted January 15, 2006 #4 Share Posted January 15, 2006 No bargains in GC, lol, this is not the port where you shop for good deals. Even the normally 'cheap' souvenirs are expensive here. You could always get the usual assortment of magnets, postcards etc. There's always rum cake which would be more meaningful if you did a rum factory tour - because otherwise, you can just buy it on the ship. serene56 Posted January 24, 2006 #5 Share Posted January 24, 2006 The stuff on the ship is not as good as the ones on the Islands.. Check the dates and you will see what I mean. Going to the facotry itself gives youmore flavors to try. its the only place I Can get pineapple choc rum cakes.
cruisecache&squash Posted January 24, 2006 #6 Share Posted January 24, 2006 We bought a ton of rum cakes after going to about 4 different stores and tasting each sample offered (that's a lot of rum cake!!). Tortuga ones are more expensive but Blackbeard had a deal where you buy six minis for $30 and got a "free" large cake. Blackbeard, IMHO was just as good as Tortuga. Everything was on the pricey side, though. Oh, except for some really cheap but cute puau shell jewelry. I got earrings & a bracelet for $9 total. Not real silver, but still cute.
