Garment bag questions?

Do you take a garment bag for the dresses and suits or do you pack those type of clothes another way? If You use a garment bag will it go through the scanner or do you have to check it with the other luggage? Having to check the garment bag would seem like the dresses and suits would then get wrinkled?
If you can carry the garment bag aboard yourself, then that would mean I would have a garment bag, an overnight bag for personal stuff, a carry on with the first night's dinner clothes in case the other suitcases did not make it on time, a camera and the wife will have her purse.
Five items to carry aboard and to lunch? How do others handle the first hour or so until you can get into your cabin? What things and how many bags have you carried aboard and then had to wait until your cabin was ready?
Where is a porter when you really need one?

Thanks for the help!

We carried our garmet bag on and it went through the scanner along with our other carry-ons. We also had 5 bags that we carried on (purse, garmet bag, 2 overnight bags and a laptop carrying case) and had 2 suitcases that we checked. It was a bit of a pain to carry around as our room was not ready yet. I recommend checking to see if your room is ready as soon as you board, even if you get a piece of paper saying it will not be ready till 1:30-2:00. Chances are, your room may be ready and you can drop everything off and unpack if you wish before you explore the ship.
Hope this helps!

We check the garment bag with the rest. The gowns/suits come to our cabin just fine... we don't need those until day 2

Weathergeek, how did you know your cabin was ready? Are the doors left open if they have not been serviced? Did you find the room steward? I am glad to hear that the garment gag would go through the scanner. crisp1, I don't think the wife would be comfortable with giving her garment bag to someone and maybe get everything wrinkled. I would not really like to take the chance if I don't have to do so.

Are you flying?? I doubt very much that you will be allowed that many carry ons with a flight.

Sometimes the cabins are ready--sometimes they are not- yes the rooms are left open. I am sure your cabin steward will allow you to hang your garment bag in the cabin.

We always try to board early, and generally the cabins aren't ready but we've never had a problem dropping our carry ons off in the cabin before heading out to explore the ship.

Get yourself a rolling garment bag and check the thing. Your clothes will not be wrinkled. On our last cruise there were 4 of us and we had both types of garment bags. I will never take a non rolling garment bag again. You can put your stuff in the room. The stewards are real good about that!

No longer cruiseless..donations still accepted ;-))

Airdale,
I could be wrong, but it seemed that if the door was open, it was not yet ready and if the door was closed, it's ready. I suppose you could always grab the nearest room steward and ask if he/she can tell you if it is ready or if he/she can direct you to someone who can tell you if it is ready. When we checked ours, our steward was in there cleaning so we did not disturb him and went on up to the Lido Deck.

check your garment bag and pack your finery in dry cleaners plasticand they won't be wrinkled. It really dosen't matter first day dining if you are dressed. They kind of expect you to be casaual from traveling knowing everybody luggage is not available right away.Don't worry be happy .

Just packing my suits and the wife's dresses individually in dry cleaner plastic will keep them from getting wrinkled when packed in a regular suitcase?
