Rapsmac Posted January 15, 2006 #1 Share Posted January 15, 2006 This is our first time in Grand Cayman and we were thinking of snorkeling from a beach on our own (with DS, 7; DD, 7; and DD, 9) all good swimmers. Eden Rock looked good: Is there a beach there? Will we see any sea life? Is it within walking distance of docking point? Any other suggestions? Any help would be appreciated. Thank You

Thank You 1) A poor excuse for one, but there is a small patch of sand. 2) Absolutely 3) 100 yards or so There are a couple of places to rent gear from- Eden Rock Dive shop and Abanks. Both have rental lockers for your stuff. It is a little farther, in the other direction, and has some boat traffic, but the Wreck of the Cali is possible, also. It is about a 2 mile walk to the beginning of 7 mile beach, so most people wouldn't walk. At Eden Rock you will see fish right away and/or can swim out a bit to the reef. I posted some recent pictures including some from Eden Rock here: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=275499 and more from a previous trip here: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=159999

wendya2J Posted January 15, 2006 #4 Share Posted January 15, 2006 Hi, I think you will enjoy it here. When we were there last year it was pretty shallow, Im not sure if it was high or low tide, but there was a small beach with chairs and a restaurant right there too. There are 2 ways to get into the water here...one is down some steps, and the other is a rocky entrance, but is really cool...make sure you have water shoes for this one... I saw the most fish here, immediately!! the restaurant was feeding them, so they were right there,,,some pretty big fish too,,,lots of parrot fish!! its well within walking distance, you can see it from your tender, and its just a couple of blocks to the right as you get off the ship,,,,you can shop on your way there or back!! have fun!!! if you are looking for more of a beach experience, i hear 7 mile beach is really nice. wendy
Capt_BJ Posted January 15, 2006 #5 Share Posted January 15, 2006 Eden Rock is nice, but as it is the closest site to the tender landings and town, tends to be crowded. Also, where the snorkeling is good close to shore - is not where the sand beaches are. It will be 'iron shore' - but there will be prepared places to enter the water - piers, ladders, concrete walls and the such. Eden does not have a kid friendly beach. If you want sand - you probably won't get world class snorkeling. Unless your kids are comfortable snorkeling in 20 to 50 feet depth I wouldn't recommend herding 3 young ones at Eden Rock. Do 7 mile or one of the other beaches recommended on this site.

zydecocruiser Posted January 16, 2006 #7 Share Posted January 16, 2006 Not really any good snorkeling along 7 mile beach unless you go to the far end and Cemetery Reef. And there is lots of shallow snorkeling at Eden Rock - you don't have to swim out to the reef nor in 50 ft of water if you don't want to. quiltsnh Posted January 16, 2006 #8 Share Posted January 16, 2006 We were there in April. It was our last stop on the Explorer. We had thought of going to 7 mile beach for a beach day but decided to walk to Eden Rock.... We got there early and settled into the few lounge chairs they have. We have our own equip. but rented vests. The stairs going in are slippery and recc. reef shoes. But you can just sit on the bottom step and swim off. ANd there are hand rails. You def. didn't have to go far to see an amazing assortment of fish.... It was nice that they had bathrooms and restaurant for beverages and food. Really enjoyed our stop. Would go again.
