Lisbon

Recommended Posts

Hi:

We will be stopping in Lisbon on the Crown Princess in April. We have been to Lisbon before and have enjoyed the excursions. Can someone suggest what we ( an older couple in their 70s ) do as a walk-off from the ship?

Thank you in advance.

It may depend on where your ship docks:  on our first 3 visits, our ship docked close to Praca de Comercio, the huge square along the Tagus River, and which you probably saw on your previous trips.  From there it was easy to walk around that part of the city.  The square is flat but all the streets that go out from it and away from the river go uphill (sometimes steeply).  They have an excellent tram service; several lines go thru Praca de Comercio and will get you up to the higher levels of the city.  The area north of the Praca is fairly level, but further inland the rest of the city is much higher (steeply so).  Great views if you can get up to that level.  We've also used their Hop On, Hop Off bus, which takes you to all the important sites, both "high" and "low".

If you have seen Lisbon a trip to Cascais is worthwhile.

There's a regular train service (every 20 minutes) from Cais de Sodre station, which is close to the ship berths.  Takes about 40 minutes and is very good value. €2.25 each way.

From Cascais its a pleasant stroll along the beach to Estoril where you can get the train back.

You should try and find out where the ship will be docked. There are several options, but it might not be easy walking distance. Have you considered the option of taking a taxi to Parque das Nações, near the Teleférico (cable car) and the river and go for a walk there and enjoy the views, and maybe go to the Aquarium "Oceanário", if you haven't been before, is very worth it.

Others areas to consider for a nice walk are Chiado and Alfama.
