Tipping

Recommended Posts

Someone help me understand how the crew receive tips.

I'm not new to cruising having cruised 12-13 times.

Let's discuss Royal Caribbean Oasis ships: I'll use round numbers and minimum amounts

5000 passengers and 2100 Crew

7 day cruise at $100 per passenger = $500,000 = $200 + per Crew although doubtful Officers... receive them

Then let's add the mandatory tip attached to every drink and spa service - who receives those dollars?

I'm all for rewarding service however want to know if my assumptions are correct

Anyone??

Post this on the RCL website to get answers.  If you get any answers here, they will be limited and may not be specific to RCL (as mine is other line experience below)

In very general terms, the tips you pay on your account get divied up by cabin steward(s), waiter and assistant, back-end people you don’t see, like kitchen crew.  No, officers — and others considered staff — do not get tips; they are on salary.  The tips added to drinks go to the bar staff (they do not get a share of what you pay on account).  Tips associated with spa services, go to the people who work in the spa (spa is not operated by the cruise line itself, but by a contractor (at least on the lines we’ve sailed on).

As a 3 star sailor on Holland America...I've been told that the entire crew (except Officers and bar tenders) share in the bounty. That means the lowest crew member gets something. I was also told that some cruise lines share the tips throughout their entire fleet...getting their share either when they depart that ship or quit...etc or once a year at Xmas or New Years Day.

I prefer the old way but unfortunately far too many are cheap and then the workers get zero. Only problem is how to tip dineing room or Lido help...they all do a great job and deserve something.
