Are Cenotes safe to swim in?

We've been in the cenote at Dzib ruins outside Progreso several times. The first few times the water was super cold and refreshing but the  last time, a couple of years ago, the water was very warm. Not sure what was going on but we didn't swim in it long.

I was super sick with severe stomach virus after a cruise 1/18. We attribute it to swimming in the cenotes. My husband didn’t swim and he was fine. My BF also didn’t swim and she was fine. Her husband however swam with me and also was very sick getting off the ship. (We were submerging which I definitely wouldn’t recommend!)
