FritzG Posted August 6, 2019 #1 Share Posted August 6, 2019 (edited) With Kirkwall & Portree being small towns, are taxis available at the port, or do we need to book a tour in advance? Edited August 6, 2019 by FritzG
lamchops Posted August 6, 2019 #2 Share Posted August 6, 2019 When I visited Kirkwall last September we took the port shuttle to the tourist information and bus station. There is a bus that takes you out into the country that everyone was lining up for. We took the local bus to Highland Park distillery for a pre-booked tasting and tour. It was a good experience as the groups are small and intimate. You must pre-book as the ship's tours took up all the spots and a lot of DIYers were disappointed. We took the bus back to town and browsed around the cathedral and town area. An inexpensive day of transportation and admissions vs what the ship was offering. Stay up late the night before arriving Kirkwall in hopes of seeing the "Northern Lights". I lasted till midnight but apparently they were seen at 3am by a few passengers and the bridge.
