We'll be going there in a couple months.  I understand it is not a 'standard' port stop.  Looking at Google Earth, it looks like about a mile or so from the port to the downtown / museum area.  Are there taxi's available?  Is there anything to do walking distance from the pier?  Any recommended excursions?

It's more than a mile- closer to 2, and for the walkers/runners out there, not really a way to do that from the port to downtown.

Can't answer the taxi part, but seeing them around the center plaza would suggest that they would know when a cruise ship is in town, so they should be there.

Near the port (I think- someone who is actually from there can answer the specific location) is La Guanca, which is a pier area with some places to eat.  Many years ago, it was really filled with shops, last time, less.  But there are commonly events out there, too- we happened upon a festival last July which had some fun live music.

Besides the Museo de Arte de Ponce and the very classic Parque de Bombas there's also Hacienda Buena Vista- which is an historic coffee plantation (which would be interesting to see 2 years after Maria) and Tibes Ceremonial Center.
