Bollycats Posted December 20, 2019 #1 Share Posted December 20, 2019 We were supposed to take a cruise last year to St.Maarten but had to cancel. The tour we were going to take included Maho Beach in the afternoon to watch the planes land. This year we are going on the same cruise and wanted to take the same tour. However, now it doesn't include Maho Beach. After getting dropped off downtown or back at the pier, how much is a taxi to Maho Beach and about how long does it take? How bad is traffic going back in the afternoon? Want to be sure we don't miss our ship departure!
Rare crewsweeper Posted December 20, 2019 #2 Share Posted December 20, 2019 Here's the Dutch side Taxi Fares. 1-2 pax $20. From Phillipsburg to Maho. http://www.taxistmaarten.com/wp-content/uploads/SXM_Zones_and_Rates_Sheet_2014.pdf Traffic in the afternoon can be pretty heavy. They accepts (and expects) USD - just like almost everywhere in carribbean ports. You are more likely to directed to mini bus of fellow cruise pax heading towards Maho for about 5 to 7 usd pp (depending on your negotiating skills) Few things to note about maho beach from recent trip: a) It can take as less as 25 minutes to as much as 90 minutes or more one way - more likely about 40 minutes But leave enough buffer coming back b) ship excursion even when offered are useless becaus ethey take place earlier in the morning when no big pplanes are coming c) look at SXM airport website for that day's arrival info (most big planes come between 2 and 4) d) beach has its sand returned but is a very tiny beach e) water can be rough - have seen 200 lb men knocked down in only knee deep water f) there is active narrow road with heavy traffic between beach and the airfield - use common sense caution h) there are still some crazy folks trying to play with dangers (warnings clearly posted) by hanging onto the fence when a jet is taking off (it is dangerous - even trying to stand up on beach or shallow water is not safe when jet is blowing air at full speed) i) pictures are better taken from the sides of the beach (from just outside sunset bar for example) j) you should not have trouble finding return transportation if you do not mind shared mininus with other cruise pax and you are willing to leave around 3 pm (beach wil suddenly start emptying around then)
