I was on the Spirit in March of 05. The specialty restaurants were incredible. We were able to eat at them 3 out of the 5 nights. The food in the main dining room was low end buffet in my opinion. The beds were the worst. This is not lie,and I kinowe becaue I travel for business 200 times a year. I love the ocean. That is probably the number one reason why I crusie every year. That is why I live on the beach in FLA. I just wish they would charge more and ask for less once you got there.

The dress has tunred more casual. I prefer fine dining and dressing up. That is my style. I may not post 10K times a year, but I have crusied 10x in 7 years and on many crusie lines. I just wish some of the old element of crusing existed.

Just look at this weeks cruise critic photo of the week.

http://www.cruisecritic.com/community/index.cfm

The Bramear was built in 1993, and has just 400 cabins. The Spirit has 966 cabins, and twice the passengers. There's no way the food can be as good as it was a decade ago, because the ships are much larger.

Because there are twice as many passengers, cruise lines have to curt to a larger customer base to fill their ships. There are only so many passengers willing to dress to the nines for dinner. That's why all cruise lines operating larger ships have slowly progressed to more causal dinning attires. To attract more passengers to fill their ships......

If you want to dress to the nines, you still can. Just don't expect everyone to. If you do expect almost everyone to dress to the nines, you're going to have to start booking cruises on smaller, more expensive cruise lines that are still sailing the smaller ships. They are still around, just not with the larger cruise lines.

And the Spirit is not the largest cruise ship sailing today. Carnival, Celebrity, Royal Carribbean, Princess, and Holland America are all sailing much larger cruise ships than the Spirit.

Just go back from NY. We all could learn how to live from NYers. Dressing to the 9's is what is all about. Dress up for once in your life. Look the part. Dress for the job you want not he one you have.

If yopu don;t work. still dress like Donald TrumP. People will respect yu mroe....................

Plus $1,000 dinners at 21 will make you fell good..:p

We were on the Sun in Dec. & it was wonderful! There were no bad experiences, all great. Embarkation & debarkation in Houston was the easiest we've had. Food in the regular restaurants was consistently very good as was the service. The buffet was exactly that, a buffet - enough said. We went to East Meets West & had the best steaks we have ever eaten - great food & service. We found the staff onboard to be exceptional. The ship was great & extremely clean. Only had to wait once to enter the restaurant for about 5 minutes. We both even won in the casino! Although we never met our room steward, the room stayed very well taken care of the entire trip. Room service very fast. Tendering process was good, even when we didn't take a ship sponsored excursion. We found the entertainers to be very good but the show styles just weren't our taste. Just a matter of opinion but sure didn't take away from the wonderful time we had. We will definitely go on the Sun again.

Michael, many of us miss some of the old policies we experienced on cruise ships 10 years ago, but many who haven't lived in the world of dressing for the occassion prefer the casual look. It is kinda nice not to have to tote all that stuff along, but it also is fun for some of us to dress to the nines. No matter what there will always be those who will complain. BTW, I know food is subjective, but don't you think calling the food in the main dining room low end buffet is a bit over doing it? As for charging more, I have to disagree but there are 2 schools of thought on this. I prefer the prices stay low and I can decide when I board the ship where I want to spend my money. For some of us it will be on alcohol, some the specialty dining and others the casino, Bingo, or the Art Auction. Many will book tours through the ship for the ease and pay the extra, some of us do it privately and others don't do tours at all. By keeping the prices down more can cruise. These are just my thoughts on the subject. NMnita

Monte I would think the travel agent at CCL would know there ships period.

Sorry Mike, I didn't realize from the other post that you had booked direct with CCL. You stated "my TA" which made me think it was something other than the cruise line TA, my mistake. I also wasn't aware you asked the CCL agent if there were any specialty dining rooms on board. period.

BTW-not all specialty dining rooms on NCL-Sun require additional payments.
