Another link to stories behind the original sherry based drink. https://lettersandliquor.com/6-SHERRY-COBBLER-1830s The Cobbler was originally made from Sherry (more popular in the early 1800s in the US than today, and apparently much more flavorful than rum, described here as tasting like "fermented gasoline"; this is the time period when rum was simply a substance to get sailors mildly drunk on their daily rations as quite a few of them had been "impressed" into service. It was also one of the first drinks to feature ice, which looked like cobblestones. Hence, apparently (probably other legends as well) cobbler.
