Rare TPKeller Posted February 17, 2006 #1 Share Posted February 17, 2006 Hello, After several years of catering to the traditional tipping crowd, I've added in a new section to the Cruise Tip Calculator geared toward lines that use service charges. Oceania is now listed as an option, with information based on what is currently published on their web site. You may not need to know how to break out the cash, but hopefully this will help with your planning and budgeting for that part of your cruise cost. Happy cruising! drwong Posted February 17, 2006 #2 Share Posted February 17, 2006 Very useful chart and tables! I noted that some other lines recommend tipping the assistant maitre'd 75 cents a day - I thought the maitre'd and his assistant were salaried employees of the cruise line so tipping was not expected for them (not that they haven't been appreciative when they get one!). Hi, One thing that appears to be very clear is that each cruise line has their own individual system for compensating their employees. While it is generally similar, as you note, the assistant maitre'd is one of those areas that has quite a variety of policies. What I would conclude from this is that those lines that recommend a tip for that person probably don't pay them quite as much as those lines that do not recommend they be tipped. Specific details are bound to vary. What it comes down to is that the folks have to make a living, whether it comes from tips or salary, that is the system that is established, so as long as everyone plays right, it should work. Bustaty Posted February 17, 2006 #5 Share Posted February 17, 2006 Oceania seems to be suggesting gratuities a bit higher than Crystal.

digby Posted February 20, 2006 #7 Share Posted February 20, 2006 Do those of you in a cabin with a butler give him an additional tip beyond what is charged as part of the auto tipping charge? If so, how much?
